The record industry is suffering from declining music sales, but things are looking up for artists. If you’re willing to take your destiny into your own hands, there’s an abundance of new ways to build a fan base and earn an income online.
Giving your opinion on the latest album or single that has been released by your favorite artist can earn you money. Artists are always seeking feedback on their songs to gauge whether they will be acceptable to fans once released to the masses. In most cases, that feedback is paid for by sites that offer them online platforms to upload their music. Popular sites such as Slice the Pie and Music xray give new musicians an opportunity to get their songs listened to and reviewed and they get paid for it. As a reviewer, you also get paid for listening to the music and sending in a comprehensive assessment.
Another great book by a good friend in the community. Bob Baker has been in the game of marketing music longer than most of us, and although some of his tips are the common sense types, this book has some great insights for the musician looking to do some guerrilla marketing (no, that’s got nothing to do with actual guerillas). For less than £15 this book is worth picking up and scanning for a few fresh ideas.
The music you create, and the brand you establish are valuable assets.  It’s why you saw a handful of large independent labels get bought out by larger labels and investment companies in 2015 and 2016.  Understand what you have.  A recorded asset, a publishing asset, lyrics, and something that can monetize in dozens of ways listed below.  So an asset is something that if nourished can provide money for an eternity, and can make you money while you are sleeping.  
I love this idea! Yet another way to generate income as a musician without having to leave the confines of your cozy artist space. I use a platform called ConcertWindow, and there are a couple others to choose from like Stageit and Gigee. There are some different tools available for use in all the platforms but something to keep in mind that I’ve found effective with Concert Window and Stageit is having the option to collect tips and give ‘rewards’ to your best tippers. It’s a wonderful incentive and a great way to really connect with your audience in a concert-type setting, without having to leave the cozy confines of your living room.

Knowing how tough it is for young musicians to fund their band, I wondered how much does it cost to start a band? It’s more expensive than I imagined.  $15,000 USD (about £12,000 GBP) was what I came up with based on the costs of collective gear, rehearsal space, website and hosting, photography, design, learning to play, merchandise, first CD pressing, etc.  This doesn’t include transportation, living expenses, touring, promotion, and advertising costs.  It’s a lot of money for a group of four or five people to come up with, and the expenses keep snowballing every month.  The next question is how to make money with music online, at shows, and from other sources.  Below, I’ll explain my approach and best tips for how to make money from your music and fund your band.
While music marketing isn’t that difficult once you know how to do it, it still requires a lot of time and energy to do it to the extent needed to make consistent money from your music. Often, doing all the marketing needed alone can lead to much slower progress, frustration, and possibly burnout.

But that doesn’t mean you’re forced to perform in the traditional ways. Bars and clubs aren’t the only options. The Internet has opened up new ways to perform which didn’t exist just five years ago. One route is through live video performances, either for a small, personal audience through a service like Skype, or for a large audience through platforms like Twitch. It’s not enough to simply post your music video to YouTube; you need to set it up for success with a great title and description. Since YouTube doesn’t have a way of analyzing the actual contents of your video, it works off of the text.
The key is that the content must be valuable and it must be exclusive. It’s not enough to put your music on Spotify, then release the same album for sale with a bonus track. It means putting significant effort into delivering something above and beyond the standard 10-track offering.
Building on the insight that fans enjoy a music video more when it is watched as a group, this execution is a music video that builds and gets bigger as multiple viewers join the screens together in the real world. It’s a great example of community building and use of mobile.
For bands with a young audience, merchandise can be the lifeblood of their business.  To become great at merchandising you have to follow the same practices that any clothing or fashion brand would adhere to.  So i’ll be doing a post about this, and giving tips on merchandise mistakes to avoid.
Weren’t expecting to see advertising on a post about how to make money?  You need traffic and awareness.  Advertising achieves both.  And if you convert your traffic right it will make you money.  Advertising is not just for albums.  You need to advertise for singles, EPs, and even streaming.   Facebook ads can generate 3x returns.  
Some people lump PledgeMusic in with Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. I don’t. PledgeMusic is different. It has changed the way the modern album campaign works. The pre-order on PledgeMusic is much more than just an advanced purchase of the album. Running a PledgeMusic campaign invites the fans into the entire album making process from start to finish. Some bands literally live stream from the studio to their backers. Many large bands who don’t need the money still run PledgeMusic campaigns (without the crowdfunding element) because it increases fan engagement and opening week sales. Artists like 311, Ben Folds Five, Imogen Heap, Howie Day, Korn (with the backwards R) and Lucinda Williams have all run campaigns. Many actually charted on Billboard in the opening week (all pre-order PledgeMusic sales are reported to Soundscan for chart placement).
While some of things you do to market your music will only involve one way interaction (you relaying a message to fans and potential fans), things will really start taking off for you when you make this interaction with fans two way. By this I mean you don’t always want to be relaying messages to them and then shutting your ears. When you update your social sites for example, as you get more followers, chances are people will often reply to something you’ve said. They want to continue the conversation you started.

Do some research, find blogs that cover your type of music, and send personal emails out to the bloggers. Are there any interesting stories about your new album, song, or tour? Having a unique story will definitely help you stand out from the thousands of other musicians releasing an album. Make it as easy as possible for them to cover your story and treat them like people. Remember, it’s all about establishing a relationship.

Donald Passman’s book provides the blueprint for the music industry. But if you’re a businessperson, publisher, manager, or otherwise really need to understand the financial side of the music business, this is your best resource.
If you’re looking to build your mailing list, a quick way to do that is with Facebook lead ads. These ads are pre-populated with a users information that’s been shared with Facebook, such as their email address, city, and phone number, which makes it a smooth process for them to complete the form and subscribe to your mailing list. You can use these ads to target people who’ve already liked your page to turn them into mailing list subscribers.
This is a big one. As well as being aware that it’s important to market your music, it’s also important to realize the amount of time and effort that goes into this process. Most people initially think that the marketing process should start when you’re about to release your next album or single, and should end before you start working on your next project. This isn’t strictly true.
What I found was that I could make decent money just by filling out online surveys for an hour or so, everyday. It was surprisingly easy since I could do them while chatting on Facebook or after my kids went to bed, so I figured I would give it a month and see how much I could earn. We don’t want to equate music sales to buying electronics, shoes, or clothes.  The point I want to make is that the consumption of your music needs to be a polished and effortless experience.  Think about the process of buying an Apple product, or shopping on Amazon.  If those don’t appeal to you, think of your favorite brand and why you like buying from them over and over again.  Go through the process of discovering and buying your band’s brand and products.  Is it ideal?  Does your best stuff come up first?  Did you find the track you want coming up first?  What’s preventing people from discovering or buying your music and merchandise?  Is it the algorithm?  The price?  Somebody else’s content?  Optimize the discovery and conversion process for your band.
That’s re-marketing, and it’s a great way to increase sales. Many of your website visitors were likely about to purchase some music or a T-Shirt, but left. In fact, most people don’t make a purchase the first time they visit a website.

That’s right. When you’re a new independent musician, you won’t get much outside help. Ok, so you might get some help from a friend who likes your music, but other than that, don’t rely on record labels or fans to help you promote your music. Why’s that? Simple, because record labels don’t generally work with unproven musicians, and you won’t yet have a fan base at this stage.
Can you describe your ideal fan?  Where are they spending time?  Make sure you have a strong presence wherever they are.  To learn more about this, read my post about Music Marketing, which I consider to be the most important post on this blog.
Simply click through the options, message the artists, and repeat the process as many times as you need. These recommendations can be great ways to find new musicians, especially if you’re using this method from your own page, because that means there’s some fanbase overlap and you can increase the perceived value of the event among ticket buyers.
Link building is the main method of improving your rankings. There are a number of link building strategies you can use to improve your websites rankings, but when it comes down to building links, it’s important to write blog posts people love and will actually want to link to.
When musicians ask me for recommendations on books to help them advance their music career, I rarely recommend books about music promotion, as many get outdated, or just say the same old shit e.g. ‘Be active on social media’ or even more painfully ‘Build a loyal fan base’. Below are a few exceptional books that I would recommend, along with a few great books on creativity, and success that I regularly recommend to musicians.

Where All You Need to Know About the Music Business ends, this book begins. Music, Money, and Success is possibly the most detailed book about the flow of money through the music industry ever written. Using real examples and conversations, the Brabec twins move meticulously through every money-generating area of the music business. It’s certainly not an easy read, but what it lacks in readability, it makes up for with exceptional depth.
Students must enroll in a certificate by paying the $175 certificate registration fee prior to completing the final course in the program. All for-credit courses that have been awarded a passing grade and that align with a certificate program may transfer into that program.
Each year I break down the standouts in music marketing, picking the best performers based on the concept, innovation, presence in culture and execution. This year we can firmly say the divide between music promotion and brand collaborations no longer exists and record labels are building out their creative, content and influencer offerings.
Don’t skip over this. I intentionally did not title #2 as “Up your merch game” even though that is what this is BECAUSE you’re probably so over hearing how important merch is that you would just skip right past it. After reading many different books on promotion and publicity for independent musicians, I*’ve grown skeptical toward what more a new book can offer. Generally, the books I’ve read don’t offer information for the trenches. Instead, they offer a little lame commentary on the fact that you would get more publicity and promotion if you were signed to a major label, and perhaps they theorize on how an independent musician might make a little splash in the medi, but there is usually very little practical information. “Guerilla Music Marketing Hand Book…” has proven an exception to this trend, with concise chapters full of very practical tips on tweaking press kits and pitches for better effect when approaching media about promo and publicity. Highly recommended.

There’s some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn’t already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman’s book over this one – a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he’s talking about.

This is a concept you may have heard about.  It was created by Kevin Kelly, founder of Wired Magazine, in a blog post he wrote called 1,000 True Fans.  It’s a math equation that makes a lot of sense for musicians, especially unsigned bands.  If you are a creator, and you have direct access to your fans and no record label or publisher in your way, you can maximize the income from 1,000 true fans and still make the same living as you would having a much larger audience.  
I expected more from this book. It is an easy read and does have some helpful pointers, but the author keeps repeating the same ideas in different ways from section to section and leaves much of the how to and who, up to the reader to search out. The cover proclaims “201 Self-Promotion Ideas” but it’s more like 50 ideas presented in different ways. I realize that repetition is key in promotion, but I don’t need so much of it in a book on the subject. Some Industry contact information is given, much of which are simple lists you can get on your own. I would have liked more insider contact information. The author does a great job at self-promoting but left me wanting a little more information on where and who to get help from. Sure the book is on self-promotion, but if you could do it yourself you wouldn’t need any help. He gives many examples in the book, but I found myself wanting more details. If you are a beginner at self-promo this book will get you going. The author works on your self-motivation. For the more experienced reader you’ll get few ideas and a lot of common sense talk that you probably already knew.
Like Encore, Gig Salad is a listing service for performers. They connect performers with the clients and venues that are looking for exactly what they do. They’re based in the United States and serve a similar demographic to Encore. However, their pricing is a bit higher for musicians.

Obviously, you could also work together on a song or album. Try recording a cover song or two together and release them on your YouTube channels or Facebook pages. The key is to drive your fans to each other. If you create a song or video, link to each other’s website and social channels.

Great discoverability – when you watch a video on Facebook, that’s been uploaded to Facebook, they recommend more videos. This means if someone is watching a music video similar to yours, they might be exposed to yours next.

His most recent role was with Universal Music Group as a Commercial Services Account Director, managing day-to-day business relationships with streaming partners. He launched & marketed UMG’s content on Spotify, from it’s introduction in the US in 2011 through it’s explosive growth stages. As account lead, Seth led UMG’s 20+ labels through an evolution in music consumption and revenue growth. Best practices that were developed over three years with Spotify were then focused on video streaming with Vevo, the #1 premium music video channel on YouTube. He worked with labels, artists, and digital marketing teams to develop and monetize visual content. Finally, let’s be smart with our money.  Keep everything in house where possible, seek endorsements and sponsorships (strings, drumsticks, drumheads). Make sure you have someone selling your merch from when the doors open to when they close. Oftentimes people will leave your show early because they have work the next morning, but want to buy something. If there is no one standing by the merch table at that moment they will leave. They will not grab a handful of stuff, run up to the stage holding their credit card and ask you to stop the show and swipe their card.

For bands with a young audience, merchandise can be the lifeblood of their business.  To become great at merchandising you have to follow the same practices that any clothing or fashion brand would adhere to.  So i’ll be doing a post about this, and giving tips on merchandise mistakes to avoid.
I found this quite helpful to put together an overall plan for a CD release. While things change so much in such a sort time in the music industry, this was fairly up to date on most things. The areas where it was not current was not from a lack of knowledge from the author, just from maker changes. A very good overall read regaurdles of the type of music that you are releasing.

The book takes the reader through some industry history, current operations (at the time) for marketing and supply chain distribution and insightful quotes from organizational leaders who have either grappled with or taken ownership of technology and how its transformed the business. The advent of internet sales and marketing are now in the forefront of the industry so I certainly look forward to a second edition follow-up. This is a must read for those setting their sights on making a career with music and I highly recommend it. Great read!

Bands tell me all the time “But our fans don’t buy merch!” Bull! If you sell it right they will buy. If you throw a few CDs in the back of a dark venue with no light, no display, no seller, OF COURSE you will sell nothing. Want to increase your merch sales? Make sure you have a BIG, BRIGHT, attractive display with lights. Make sure it looks super pro.
The book wasn’t bad. It just didn’t seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I’m just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that’s the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.

I bought this book because of how affordable it was used, it might have been relevant when it was published however now all of the information published, especially with regard to social media is outdated and/or easily found for free in music marketing blogs. I hoped at least the music industry information would be helpful, but it’s only a brief synopsis. For example, it talks about press releases without providing any in depth examples or instructions on writing one. That’s just one example however. If you know nothing about the music industry I guess it might be helpful, but most of this information is already available for free on the internet.
True fans are the ones that consume everything you create and are just waiting to buy whatever you put out next.  They’re the first to buy tickets.  They’ll buy all editions, versions, and all 5 colors of your vinyl pressings. The math he uses simply says if you make $100 from 1,000 fans ($100,000), it’s better than making $1 from 100,000 fans.  It’s not for everybody though.  It requires a lot of energy and investment to nourish these 1,000 fans. If you don’t like the idea of serving a thousand or a few thousand fans, and engaging them so directly, it might not be for you.  The idea of having less fans doesn’t sound like a good idea.  But the real point is to show you that in the beginning, if you focus on 1,000, and you really serve that audience, your fans will multiply naturally well beyond that.  Also you will be more in tune with your audience and know what they like.

Making money in the music industry is hard. But it is entirely possible, with the right strategies. A few years ago, I asked 12 of my favorite people to share their advice on how to monetize music. But that doesn’t mean you’re forced to perform in the traditional ways. Bars and clubs aren’t the only options. The Internet has opened up new ways to perform which didn’t exist just five years ago. One route is through live video performances, either for a small, personal audience through a service like Skype, or for a large audience through platforms like Twitch. On Twitch, you can live-stream your performance, interact with your fans through chat and video, receive payments, and sell merchandise. Some artists are using connections built through the Internet to book small house shows all over the country. The crowd is small, but intimate, and fans are willing to pay more in order to actually meet and hang out with a favorite artist.
I really like this book. It is a required assignment for a class, but I like it anyway. It is always good to know more ways to market your band, or who you are working with. It seems to tell you a little about everything, but it isn’t really boring to read. It is usually one of the first assignments that I do for the week – to read this book.

Getting placed in a well-followed, niche playlists can quickly expose your music to hundreds, or even thousands of people. Simply find playlists that contain your style of music, and reach out to the creator of the playlist on social media or directly through the social music platform you’re using.
You could also use gigs to grow a fanbase in new cities, states, or countries. Work with a local established band and propose a headline swap. You’ll open for them in their home town and they’ll open for you in your home town. Just make sure you pick a band with a similar musical style. Do this a few times and eventually you’ll be able to do your own headlining show.

More hands make lighter work; it’s not a good idea to do everything by yourself once you know you have something that people will really take too, So get others involved once your talent level is at a good level and you know what direction you should be heading in.
Knowing how tough it is for young musicians to fund their band, I wondered how much does it cost to start a band? It’s more expensive than I imagined.  $15,000 USD (about £12,000 GBP) was what I came up with based on the costs of collective gear, rehearsal space, website and hosting, photography, design, learning to play, merchandise, first CD pressing, etc.  This doesn’t include transportation, living expenses, touring, promotion, and advertising costs.  It’s a lot of money for a group of four or five people to come up with, and the expenses keep snowballing every month.  The next question is how to make money with music online, at shows, and from other sources.  Below, I’ll explain my approach and best tips for how to make money from your music and fund your band.
The merch inventory and point of sale tracking platform, AtVenu has calculated that for venues 500-1,000 capacity, the average dollar per head (DPH) is $3.65. That means, if you have 100 people at your show, you should make AT LEAST $365 on merch. If you don’t, you are falling below average.
In this article, we’ll be covering eight specific marketplaces where musicians can make real money in a variety of ways. Rest assured that these ideas won’t be tired old suggestions like “use Craigslist” or general advice like “just gig more.” These are technology-driven online resources, and they’re working for thousands of musicians. Now, it’s your turn.
It’s fairly easy to set up a blog on the homepage of your website. Most website tools like Bandzoogle, and WordPress, have blog capabilities. Plan out blog posts at regular intervals like once or twice a week and share anything you think your fans would find interesting. This could be the inspirations behind certain songs, new lyrical ideas you’re working on, a funny story from the last band practice, or even a run-down of the gear you use.
It’s not enough to simply post your music video to YouTube; you need to set it up for success with a great title and description. Since YouTube doesn’t have a way of analyzing the actual contents of your video, it works off of the text.
What I often see however, are fans replying on musician’s walls, but the musicians not replying in return. Even if they’re asked a reasonable question. While the affect of this won’t be as big if you’re always gaining new fans and have a very big fanbase, when you’re still in the growing stage, replying to the majority of your fans will help you grow a lot quicker.

If you’re looking to build your mailing list, a quick way to do that is with Facebook lead ads. These ads are pre-populated with a users information that’s been shared with Facebook, such as their email address, city, and phone number, which makes it a smooth process for them to complete the form and subscribe to your mailing list. You can use these ads to target people who’ve already liked your page to turn them into mailing list subscribers.

But the Internet is also cheap enough and efficient enough for individual artists to control their own destinies. You can launch a website, market through YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, set up an online store, and even distribute your music to all the major music retailers all for less than $100. That has never, ever been possible before, even less than a decade ago. Artists have the power now.
Music marketing isn’t just about how to get new fans, but it’s also about using the right distribution channels to ensure your music is in the right places so existing fans can easily find it. While some may visit your website, most will seek out your music on download or streaming service.
What makes Anything You Want such a great read for musicians is that it explains how Derek was frustrated that he couldn’t sell his music online, which is why he created a buy-it-now button on his website. When other musicians saw Derek selling his music with a buy-it-now button they asked if they too could sell their music on his website, until he finally ended building an ‘online music shop’, known today as CDbaby.com. If you don’t want to spend the £5 or so on buying this book, I strongly recommending dedicating at least an hour or so to reading some of Derek’s life lessons on his blog sivers.org – you will not regret it.

It is a verb in LA at this point “Venmo me.” Basically, Venmo is the easiest way to pay someone. It’s as easy as sending a text. Much easier than PayPal. “The intention of the book is to completely wipe out many of the misconceptions musicians have when it comes to music marketing. I’m a music promoter. This book wasn’t written by an entertainment lawyer or a label CEO. I’m DIY and I write about what has worked for me, and many of the ideas I’m happy to say just don’t get talked about anywhere else. It’s all straight talk and actionable advice. Musicians have the most trouble and confusion about generating press, so that’s what I focus on. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so I hope this book inspires and brings clarity to artists” says Moore.
Networking with other musicians within your scene and building relationships with them is extremely important. Hang out in music stores, go to local shows, and be friendly to others who are supportive of your efforts. This will benefit you if you ever want to cross-promote an album release, need musicians to play shows with, or even need to find a new band member.
Collaboration is an often overlooked aspect of music promotion. It’s a great way to get your music in front of a new group of people and grow your fanbase exponentially. You can collaborate on pretty much anything. Just make sure you collaborate with musicians whose fans would appreciate your music. Choose to work with bands in a similar genre or with similar fanbase demographics.
Kickstarter has lead the way with nearly $120 million going to successful music projects. IndieGoGo is a close second and, unlike Kickstarter, allows creators to keep the money even if a project is unsuccessful (if the creator chose “flexible funding”). The most successful music crowd funding project is of course Amanda Palmer’s project which raised $1.2 million for her album. But there have been over 18,000 successful Kickstarter music projects (mostly funding albums) ranging from $1,000 to $1.2 million. Crowdfunding has been a great way for indie artists to bankroll their albums and tours without a label or investor.
Another thing you’ll want to do offline is chase up opportunities. Email can be a slow process, but when dealing with companies, often a phone call or going to see them in person can speed things up considerably. Not only that, but you have the chance to potentially connect with them in ways others who go through email simply won’t.
Lastly, don’t only promote your music online! I know the internet has made it easy to sit and promote your music from the comfort of your own home. That said, if you only market your music offline, you’re missing out on a load of other worthwhile opportunities!
Weren’t expecting to see advertising on a post about how to make money?  You need traffic and awareness.  Advertising achieves both.  And if you convert your traffic right it will make you money.  Advertising is not just for albums.  You need to advertise for singles, EPs, and even streaming.   Facebook ads can generate 3x returns.

He also printed 1000 CD’s of the album, filled with exclusive content and extras, which could be purchased for $100 each. Once they’d all been purchased, there would be no more sold.
Link building is the main method of improving your rankings. There are a number of link building strategies you can use to improve your websites rankings, but when it comes down to building links, it’s important to write blog posts people love and will actually want to link to.

CD’s and Vinyl can be a major source of income depending on your distribution.  While selling CD and Vinyl at shows can be 25% of your income each night, the profit from physical music is higher than t-shirts or clothing.  Furthermore, if you are unsigned or on a small independent label that doesn’t have physical distribution there is another good option.  CDBaby has a partnership with Alliance Entertainment, the largest wholesale provider of music, movies, and video games in the United States.  In North America, Target, Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, FYE, and independent shops make up the physical marketplace.

Gigs are a great place to promote your new album or song. Tell your fans that you’ll be premiering a new song (or the whole album if you want to go all out) before it’s released. Choose one local gig and turn it into an event. Maybe fans who come to that show will be able to buy the album at your merch booth before anyone else.
Earning money on Skype using your musical skills is quite easy if you have an account on the site. Even so, setting up an account on the internet telephony site is simple as you only need to download the application to your computer or handheld device to start using it. A great way to add a jumpstart to your fanbase is to play with musicians who have a much larger fanbase than yours. Network with local artists in your area, or in cities you’re touring to – check out their social media followings (both in size and engagement), and reach out to new artists who you’d like to play a show with.
Perfect, this sounds like an excellent option for someone who loves to listen to music while doing just about everything else. A little bit of extra cash for doing something you were doing anyway is always a good deal. Are these programs available worldwide, or just for residents of the USA or UK?
3. Another thing I want to talk about is websites that present themselves as work at home jobs doing data entry, taking paid surveys, and typing at home. Generally these websites are trying to sell you information on how to get involved in this type of work.
In the last 10 to 20 years, most CD/music stores have all but gone the way of the dinosaur. There are still some out there, and a lot of independents have survived thanks to the resurgence of vinyl records. But fewer and fewer people are buying music in CD form any more.
This is a great book, but keep in mind that it’s not up-to-date anymore. The music business is rapidly changing such that the internet is more important than physical CDs. This book has a lot of great information on brick-and-mortar retail, but doesn’t focus enough on or have the most current information on online marketing.
Music lessons have always been a great source of revenue for musicians, but the long commutes and all the effort it takes to get students can prevent lessons from paying well. Encore is a UK-based web and mobile app used to hire musicians for gigs. Gigs are typically for events, parties, weddings, or small venues, which can make this a lucrative side revenue stream. Many classical musicians have had success in landing quick gigs through Encore, and it’s completely free for musicians. For that alone, it’s worth signing up to see how the service works for you — if you’re based in the UK.

If you distribute through CD Baby or Tunecore, I recommend you use their Publishing entities CD Baby Pro or TuneCore Publishing.  Another good option is SongTrust because they are highly adept at YouTube collection.  If you are signed to a label or a 3rd party owns your master, you can start your own publishing company and have Harry Fox Agency (Now owned by SESAC) manage this part of your publishing rights.  
Music placements in TV, Video, Film, Video Games, and Advertisements.  For a company or individual to use your composition in “synchronization” with motion picture, they need a “synch” license and a negotiated fee to pay you for that use. Also they need a master license, and a fee for the “master” use, but that does not have to do with publishing. And if you own your master, then they need to obtain the master license from you. And if a label owns your master, they need to obtain the master license from the label.  In addition, every synch has two fees involved; A master fee, and a publishing fee.  Therefore those need to be agreed on in two separate contracts.  Research and contact music supervisors yourself to start.  Be wary of signing any exclusive agreements to pitch your music, or you risk not getting signed by a publisher or label.
Before you start gigging, make sure you have the best gear possible so you can give music fans the experience they deserve. Get the best electric or acoustic guitar, the best amps, and overall best gear you can so that you give new listeners a great first impression.

If you throw a few CDs in the back of a dark venue with no light, no display, no seller, OF COURSE you will sell nothing. Want to increase your merch sales? Make sure you have a BIG, BRIGHT, attractive display with lights. Make sure it looks super pro.
Today, physical distribution is too costly and limited in scope to be worthwhile. Digital distribution is the new standard. Digital distribution services like CD Baby, TuneCore, and Ditto Music allow any musician (independent or major) to get their music out to popular online music stores and streaming sites like iTunes, Spotify, TIDAL, Pandora, Google Play, and so on.

If you don’t want to spend the £5 or so on buying this book, I strongly recommending dedicating at least an hour or so to reading some of Derek’s life lessons on his blog sivers.org – you will not regret it.

As you say, one couldn’t do this full time and give up your day job, and I think you should only do this if you really love music, or you will be disappointed in the small change you get for doing this.
However, there are lots of other music platforms that don’t accept music from these services for specific licensing reasons, like Soundcloud or Dozmia. It’s important to make sure your music is on these services as well, as they often have a loyal following.

Generally, transfer credit cannot be used to fulfill prerequisites unless we determine that the course you completed is a direct equivalent to one of the courses we offer at Berklee Online. Keep in mind that there are some courses which require you to pass a placement exam. It’s important to remember, though, that social media isn’t the end-all-be-all when it comes to promoting your music. It can easily become a huge time suck that takes you away from your music if you don’t manage your time properly (Hint: get social media time management tips here).

12. Do keep current with what is happening with other artists you love, admire, envy or follow. The artists who you perceive as a step ahead of you can be very helpful. They are doing what you should be doing. Figure out what it is and go do similar things.

Headlining shows on a weekend can be the best money you make in the early days.  Another thing you can do is create and brand a monthly headline show for your band that has a theme.  This is a creative way to approach your local market.  Futhermore, you can invite different support acts each time to keep the bill fresh and build community in your scene.  Now, if you can’t come up with an interesting way to keep people engaged and coming back monthly, don’t use this strategy.  But, I like this strategy for several reasons.  It gives you focus.  You can put your energy into promoting one event per/month.  In addition it prevents overplaying your market.  You can still jump on as support for large national acts here and there.  But you’ll be less willing to do those when you can headline instead.  Finally use this to strengthen your brand and show your creativity.  Make it fun.
The Internet makes it possible to reach millions and millions of fans around the world for an astonishingly low cost. The biggest obstacle is getting their attention in the first place. This is great for the mainstream artists who can invest millions of dollars into getting that attention, and then make a little bit of money from each listener. But the Internet is also cheap enough and efficient enough for individual artists to control their own destinies. You can launch a website, market through YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, set up an online store, and even distribute your music to all the major music retailers all for less than $100. That has never, ever been possible before, even less than a decade ago. Artists have the power now.

Seems absurd, right? Well, what are you expecting not having a seller back there at all times? Obviously you must take credit. A Square or PayPal swiper is totally free. Get it. Take cards. Who carries cash anymore? I sure don’t. Yes, take Venmo. Make merch your fans want to buy – not what you think you should make. If your audience is 50+ Vinyl is a waste of money. They ain’t buying it. If your crowd is 18-35 year olds, Vinyl may be the way to go – millennials LOVE vinyl. Announce that you have merch from the stage. Put your merch display in a prominent place in the venue – best is near the door. Get creative in your merch offerings. Do it right. And you will double your live show income. Guaranteed.
Ok, great response, Anon. So apparently it is harder to make a living as a music artist today. According to that graph, the number of working musicians dropped by nearly half between 2002 and 2012. Wow.
Simply put, reaching out to radio stations over the phone is a massive cold calling effort. Bigger radio stations are likely owned by huge corporations that are in bed with the major labels, but there’s opportunity to be found for independent artists and labels in smaller radio stations and the college radio market, so don’t think it’s out of reach for you.

Streaming is the newest player in the game, with services like Spotify growing in double-digits each year. These companies are helping to bring billions of dollars in revenue into the industry each year, but they do so in large part by cannibalizing music sales. Why would you purchase a CD when you can get a month of Spotify, with access to millions of tracks including the CD you were about to buy, for the same cost? It’s an easy decision to make, and it’s why so many people are changing over to streaming as their main source of music. Including myself.
You can pay to boost your post on Facebook so more people see it. With Facebook’s organic reach being low, this can get your posts in front of more people who like your page, boosting likes, comments, and shares for important messages.

However, their fee is substantially higher than Synkio’s 15% cut; instead, you’ll pay 50%.
Many completely independent musicians are making six figures a year getting songs placed on TV shows, commercials and films – without a label or manager. It’s possible to do. But there is a way to go about it and you have to know exactly HOW to pitch licensing companies, ad agencies, music supervisors and movie producers and exactly WHICH of your songs to pitch. Most times songs that work for TV dramas do not work for commercials.

The steep decline has been fueled partially by music piracy, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Digital downloads fundamentally changed the way music listeners purchase their music, and iTunes took a 30% cut of every sale. It turns out that fans want to pay to support their favorite artists, and are willing to do so if only they have the opportunity. A Nielsen study found that more than half of the most active music listeners would buy exclusive content from a favorite band recording a new album. But surprisingly, 1/5 of even the least active music fans, dubbed “Ambivalent Consumers”, are willing to buy exclusive content if they have the chance. The problem isn’t that fans aren’t willing to pay — it’s that the music industry isn’t giving them enough opportunity to do so, for content they actually want. Nielsen estimated that the music industry could add between $560 million and $2.6 billion in annual revenue by giving fans better access to exclusive content.
I love this idea! Yet another way to generate income as a musician without having to leave the confines of your cozy artist space. I use a platform called ConcertWindow, and there are a couple others to choose from like Stageit and Gigee. There are some different tools available for use in all the platforms but something to keep in mind that I’ve found effective with Concert Window and Stageit is having the option to collect tips and give ‘rewards’ to your best tippers. It’s a wonderful incentive and a great way to really connect with your audience in a concert-type setting, without having to leave the cozy confines of your living room.

Apple has put a lot of energy into defining its role in the modern music experience, and Google recently launched YouTube Music — quietly, but with a confidence fueled by positive consumer feedback so far.

It’s hard to argue with the constantly evolving model that Kanye used for the creation and release of “The Life of Pablo.” There was the massive amount of buzz and press that the teased release generated, the MSG listening party/fashion show and let’s not forget the wax sculptures. He barely needed the beef with Taylor Swift to remain in the spotlight.
Headlining shows on a weekend can be the best money you make in the early days.  Another thing you can do is create and brand a monthly headline show for your band that has a theme.  This is a creative way to approach your local market.  Futhermore, you can invite different support acts each time to keep the bill fresh and build community in your scene.  Now, if you can’t come up with an interesting way to keep people engaged and coming back monthly, don’t use this strategy.  But, I like this strategy for several reasons.  It gives you focus.  You can put your energy into promoting one event per/month.  In addition it prevents overplaying your market.  You can still jump on as support for large national acts here and there.  But you’ll be less willing to do those when you can headline instead.  Finally use this to strengthen your brand and show your creativity.  Make it fun.

True fans are the ones that consume everything you create and are just waiting to buy whatever you put out next.  They’re the first to buy tickets.  They’ll buy all editions, versions, and all 5 colors of your vinyl pressings. The math he uses simply says if you make $100 from 1,000 fans ($100,000), it’s better than making $1 from 100,000 fans.  It’s not for everybody though.  It requires a lot of energy and investment to nourish these 1,000 fans. If you don’t like the idea of serving a thousand or a few thousand fans, and engaging them so directly, it might not be for you.  The idea of having less fans doesn’t sound like a good idea.  But the real point is to show you that in the beginning, if you focus on 1,000, and you really serve that audience, your fans will multiply naturally well beyond that.  Also you will be more in tune with your audience and know what they like.
