As long as there is music, there will be performance.
Giving your opinion on the latest album or single that has been released by your favorite artist can earn you money. Artists are always seeking feedback on their songs to gauge whether they will be acceptable to fans once released to the masses. Weren’t expecting to see advertising on a post about how to make money?  You need traffic and awareness.  Advertising achieves both.  And if you convert your traffic right it will make you money.  Advertising is not just for albums.  You need to advertise for singles, EPs, and even streaming.   Facebook ads can generate 3x returns.  
That’s right. When you’re a new independent musician, you won’t get much outside help. Ok, so you might get some help from a friend who likes your music, but other than that, don’t rely on record labels or fans to help you promote your music. Why’s that? Simple, because record labels don’t generally work with unproven musicians, and you won’t yet have a fan base at this stage.
While your account is free, TakeLessons does take a steep cut from your early lessons. When you’ve taught a student less than 6 times, you will only receive 60% of their payout. However, that percentage rises over time, and with long-term students you’ll take home 90% of your fee.
True fans are the ones that consume everything you create and are just waiting to buy whatever you put out next.  They’re the first to buy tickets.  They’ll buy all editions, versions, and all 5 colors of your vinyl pressings. The math he uses simply says if you make $100 from 1,000 fans ($100,000), it’s better than making $1 from 100,000 fans.  It’s not for everybody though.  It requires a lot of energy and investment to nourish these 1,000 fans. If you don’t like the idea of serving a thousand or a few thousand fans, and engaging them so directly, it might not be for you.  The idea of having less fans doesn’t sound like a good idea.  But the real point is to show you that in the beginning, if you focus on 1,000, and you really serve that audience, your fans will multiply naturally well beyond that.  Also you will be more in tune with your audience and know what they like.  
While this does happen, it’s extremely rare, and setting the unrealistic expectation that it will happen to you is a recipe for failure. Instead, set yourself apart from the crowd by learning all you can about different music marketing tactics, and treating your music career as a business.

Lastly, don’t only promote your music online! I know the internet has made it easy to sit and promote your music from the comfort of your own home. That said, if you only market your music offline, you’re missing out on a load of other worthwhile opportunities!
This book is loaded with great information and ideas for the independent musician, or even his/her manager; however, it emphasizes “bands” throughout, and I would have liked to see a bit more direction toward the solo artist and, for my needs, particularly classical artists. Much of the same information provided can apply in all cases, but obviously, classical artists do have some specific hurdles to deal with and it has been very challenging to find materials directed specifically to them. Overall though, while some of the information may be common sense, much of it may not be in use by any given individual, so the many ideas are valuable, indeed. It’s like someone already did a good deal of the brainstorming so the musician or manager can simply make use of it and move on with business.
This book is a personal favorite of the EDMProd team. It’ll change your perspective on the modern workplace, teaching you how to craft a business that works on its own. As an artist, you’re also an entrepreneur. The hacks and tips in this book will help you be more efficient and effective, not just in production but also in your career.

Each year I break down the standouts in music marketing, picking the best performers based on the concept, innovation, presence in culture and execution. This year we can firmly say the divide between music promotion and brand collaborations no longer exists and record labels are building out their creative, content and influencer offerings.
In 2013, Nipsey Hussle made his first attempt at an unconventional album release. The Los Angeles rapper released Crenshaw completely for free online — with a twist. He also printed 1000 CD’s of the album, filled with exclusive content and extras, which could be purchased for $100 each. Once they’d all been purchased, there would be no more sold.
But that doesn’t mean you’re forced to perform in the traditional ways. Bars and clubs aren’t the only options. The Internet has opened up new ways to perform which didn’t exist just five years ago. One route is through live video performances, either for a small, personal audience through a service like Skype, or for a large audience through platforms like Twitch. On Twitch, you can live-stream your performance, interact with your fans through chat and video, receive payments, and sell merchandise. Some artists are using connections built through the Internet to book small house shows all over the country. The crowd is small, but intimate, and fans are willing to pay more in order to actually meet and hang out with a favorite artist.

It means that in order to sell your sound, you’re gonna need to know all about music distribution and promoting your music once it’s out. It’ll take some creativity too—y’know, that same creativity you use to make music everyday.
Album art is extremely important for the online music world. In most cases, your music will be prominently featured with album art being the first thing people see – before ever hearing your music. If you want a chance at someone clicking the artwork to hear your song, the image better look worth clicking.
12. Do keep current with what is happening with other artists you love, admire, envy or follow. The artists who you perceive as a step ahead of you can be very helpful. They are doing what you should be doing. Figure out what it is and go do similar things.

This can be a delightful way to earn on the side. I sometimes find myself looking for new and interesting music to listen to whenever I want to relax. Finally, let’s be smart with our money.  Keep everything in house where possible, seek endorsements and sponsorships (strings, drumsticks, drumheads). Used gear.  Try to get artist discounts where possible.  Ask for it every time, even if you know it’s not offered.  Stay at people’s houses when touring.
Many completely independent musicians are making six figures a year getting songs placed on TV shows, commercials and films – without a label or manager. It’s possible to do. But there is a way to go about it and you have to know exactly HOW to pitch licensing companies, ad agencies, music supervisors and movie producers and exactly WHICH of your songs to pitch. Most times songs that work for TV dramas do not work for commercials.
In a multi-billion dollar industry based upon an art form, things get messy. For every story of an artist earning millions from their musical talents, there’s the story of an artist who lost millions through bad financial decisions. The music business is complicated, and it’s viciously competitive. This means that making a living in this business without properly understanding how the business works is incredibly risky. Whether you’re a songwriter, an artist, a manager, or a businessperson, you must be well-informed to have a serious shot at long-term success in the music business.
The author, Donald Passman, has been a top music attorney for more than 30 years since graduating from Harvard Law. He also taught an advanced music industry course at USC’s law school for many years, and famously negotiated R.E.M.’s $80 million Warner Brothers deal, among other accomplishments. In other words, he knows his stuff.
Similar to online e-concerts, but these are privately held events. This is something that you could set up on your online store as a gift option. A fan could buy the gift of a private one-hour Skype show for his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. Then, you serenade the two of them and give them a very special and unique experience that they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else.
Finally, the important thing to remember here is only grant exclusive rights to a partner for a limited period of time, and only in the territory that you trust them to be proficient in.  Because they may try to do a land grab in other non-traditional music markets like South Africa, Israel, China, Philippines, India.  Don’t let them.  So retain your digital rights in those territories, since they will not be actively marketing in them, and you will be with social media and email marketing.
Of course, these aren’t the only ways to promote your music offline. Don’t focus strictly on online music marketing, as working within your comfort zone will most likely slow things down for you in terms of progress. So give offline music marketing a go too.

If you don’t want to spend the £5 or so on buying this book, I strongly recommending dedicating at least an hour or so to reading some of Derek’s life lessons on his blog sivers.org – you will not regret it.

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.
Headlining shows on a weekend can be the best money you make in the early days.  Another thing you can do is create and brand a monthly headline show for your band that has a theme.  This is a creative way to approach your local market.  Futhermore, you can invite different support acts each time to keep the bill fresh and build community in your scene.  Now, if you can’t come up with an interesting way to keep people engaged and coming back monthly, don’t use this strategy.  But, I like this strategy for several reasons.  It gives you focus.  You can put your energy into promoting one event per/month.  In addition it prevents overplaying your market.  You can still jump on as support for large national acts here and there.  But you’ll be less willing to do those when you can headline instead.  Finally use this to strengthen your brand and show your creativity.  Make it fun.
Again, this book by 37 Signals is more intended for creative entrepreneurs opposed to musicians directly, but there are some great lessons to be learnt in this book about being unconventional when it comes to working on building your career as a musician.

However, music lessons are one of the most sought-after types on the platform. With a free TakeLessons account, you can reach students around the world using either their mobile app or web platform. Lessons are taught over video, and you’ll receive extra resources like file sharing to help maintain lesson schedules over time.

In the early 90’s, a journalist named Fredric Dannen extensively researched the behind-the-scenes activity of the major labels in the 70’s and 80’s. He recorded the excess, the greed, the ruthless business practices, the struggle for money and power, and the bitter rivalries between America’s biggest record labels at the height of the music industry.
From my perspective, music marketing is a more formal term. Practically every company has a marketing department or a marketing person, and if not, they collaborate with a marketing agency to further their business objectives.
The process is pretty simple. When you sign up (it’s free), you tell Music Xray a bit about yourself and your musical preferences. The site’s software then sends you tracks that you might like. Listen for 30 seconds and get 10 cents, or $12 per hour. The number of tracks you get will depend on your profile and the tracks being submitted by the bands.
StageIt and Concert Window are leading the way in the online concert world. Most shows are “pay what you want” and encourage tipping. I’ve played a few StageIt shows and have averaged about $5 a head for a “pay what you want” concert (from tipping and tickets). Not bad for playing songs from my living room.
If it takes $15,000 to start a band, you can imagine the expenses keep rolling in as the months and years go on. Fundraising or crowdfunding has been a brilliant use of technology.  There are plenty of great options to choose from. Pledge Music, Kickstarter, and Indiegogo for example. Don’t wing it in this space because the experts in this field have discovered some great tricks to increase pre-orders. Make sure to do what the best and most successful bands have done, and get creative.

When musicians ask me for recommendations on books to help them advance their music career, I rarely recommend books about music promotion, as many get outdated, or just say the same old shit e.g. ‘Be active on social media’ or even more painfully ‘Build a loyal fan base’. Below are a few exceptional books that I would recommend, along with a few great books on creativity, and success that I regularly recommend to musicians.
To get your website into Google and Bing more quickly, you can submit each url of your website directly to them. Before you do, make sure you give the pages of your website names that people might search for, such as “-band name- store” or “about -band name-.”

Put a tip jar at your Merch table with a big sign, “If you liked the show, show us how much! Cash (arrow) or Venmo: @mybandname” You can even have a projector on stage and have like a real time auction with Venmo tips for a screen print or a backstage hang or a date with the drummer. Whatever. There are endless possibilities. Either way, think about how you can utilize Venmo to make more money at the show.
For bands with a young audience, merchandise can be the lifeblood of their business.  To become great at merchandising you have to follow the same practices that any clothing or fashion brand would adhere to.  So i’ll be doing a post about this, and giving tips on merchandise mistakes to avoid.
While some of things you do to market your music will only involve one way interaction (you relaying a message to fans and potential fans), things will really start taking off for you when you make this interaction with fans two way. By this I mean you don’t always want to be relaying messages to them and then shutting your ears. When you update your social sites for example, as you get more followers, chances are people will often reply to something you’ve said. They want to continue the conversation you started.

This year was all about live, as VR/AR takes a backseat for now. Make sure you have someone selling your merch from when the doors open to when they close. One artist who’s been particularly successful at innovating in an industry stereotypically unable to innovate is Nipsey Hussle.

Mike King is a course author, instructor, and the Vice President of Enrollment at Berklee College of Music and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Berklee Online. Prior to working at Berklee, Mike was the Marketing/Product Manager at Rykodisc, where he oversaw marketing efforts for label artists including Mickey Hart, Jeb Loy Nichols, Morphine, Jess Klein, Voices On The Verge, Bill Hicks, The Slip, Pork Tornado (Phish), Kelly Joe Phelps, and Frank Zappa’s estate. Mike was the Director of Marketing and Managing Editor of Herb Alpert’s online musician’s resource, ArtistsHouseMusic, for three years.
Companies like Audiam, INDMusic, Fullscreen, Maker Studios, ONErpm, AdRev, Believe and Rumblefish collect YouTube ad revenue for artists and labels. Multi Channel Networks like Fullscreen and Maker also act as agents for their creators and negotiate high paying sponsorships for their videos and YouTube channels.
His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.
Fundamentally, music is promoted in much the same way anything else is – with online methods like email, social media, advertising, and with offline methods like live events (concerts and tours) and word-of-mouth.
The book wasn’t bad. It just didn’t seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I’m just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that’s the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.

None of this is good news for the recorded music industry as a whole. Streaming may eventually become a massive business fueled by tens of billions of consumer dollars, but we’re certainly not there yet. And when we get there, it’s not clear what proportion of those billions of dollars will be flowing into the pockets of the recorded music industry.
Another book used in the Music Business courses taught at Berkelee School of Music. A decent primer and probably a solid textbook for those of you taking the class. These kinds of books I think are a necessity to the aspiring musician or music industry mind. Even those of you who have been invested in the industry can learn a lot from this one. Sometimes artists can gain a lot from the basic understanding of what all those ‘behind the scenes’ people are doing.
I bought this book because of how affordable it was used, it might have been relevant when it was published however now all of the information published, especially with regard to social media is outdated and/or easily found for free in music marketing blogs. I hoped at least the music industry information would be helpful, but it’s only a brief synopsis. For example, it talks about press releases without providing any in depth examples or instructions on writing one. That’s just one example however. If you know nothing about the music industry I guess it might be helpful, but most of this information is already available for free on the internet.

More important, they will develop the mindset to be aware of new advancements both online and in the real world and always stay in tune with a constantly evolving landscape.

He is also the owner of Make It In Music, an online site that is the ultimate resource for aspiring musicians offering advice, tips, and insight on all the skills needed by modern artists to succeed in the rapidly changing music industry.
I really like this book. It is a required assignment for a class, but I like it anyway. It is always good to know more ways to market your band, or who you are working with. It seems to tell you a little about everything, but it isn’t really boring to read. It is usually one of the first assignments that I do for the week – to read this book.
More hands make lighter work; it’s not a good idea to do everything by yourself once you know you have something that people will really take too, So get others involved once your talent level is at a good level and you know what direction you should be heading in.
I bought this for my nephew who is studying marketing at college. He is a musician and interns at many events making and playing music. I think he aspires to use his marketing degree towards his music. He just loved this book.
With everything moving more and more towards digital, it’s easy to forget about the value of that person-to-person interaction. After all, these days you can create great quality music, release it, distribute it, promote it, and even play live without ever leaving your room.
When people look for marketing positions in the music industry, they search for “music marketing jobs”. I know this, because I see it pop up as a keyword all the time. That will be a subject for a future blog post.

Social media is a great marketing tool for musicians, however, many musicians use it incorrectly – spamming people with music video links in messages and comments in an attempt to get more followers and likes.
Your website shouldn’t be a static thing. It should be ever adapting and changing to reflect new events in your career. Basically, you want your fans stopping by your website as often as possible. The more often they’re on your site, the more they’re exposed to your albums, merch, and tickets.
I expected more from this book. It is an easy read and does have some helpful pointers, but the author keeps repeating the same ideas in different ways from section to section and leaves much of the how to and who, up to the reader to search out. The cover proclaims “201 Self-Promotion Ideas” but it’s more like 50 ideas presented in different ways. I realize that repetition is key in promotion, but I don’t need so much of it in a book on the subject. Some Industry contact information is given, much of which are simple lists you can get on your own. I would have liked more insider contact information. The author does a great job at self-promoting but left me wanting a little more information on where and who to get help from. Sure the book is on self-promotion, but if you could do it yourself you wouldn’t need any help. He gives many examples in the book, but I found myself wanting more details. If you are a beginner at self-promo this book will get you going. The author works on your self-motivation. For the more experienced reader you’ll get few ideas and a lot of common sense talk that you probably already knew.
Music promotion is often the missing link between an Artist’s music and the potential fan base. Without promoting the music, the music fan doesn’t get to find out about the music. Without a label, musicians don’t have a music promotion team behind them. However, this doesn’t have to mean that a musician can’t get a team behind them.. they just have to put it together.
If you have passion for music and enjoy interacting with students that share the same love for singing, then you can create a music course at Udemy. Udemy is an online platform that offers music lovers a chance to create music courses on their site and then share revenue for every successful course they deliver. They offer you users a number of hosting and design tools that empower them to train online which makes it easier to set up an online course and get students to sign up at a fee. You will find the downloadable instructor handbook that has been made available by the site a valuable resource in crafting music courses on Udemy.

In a conversational tone, it reveals a systematic business approach employing the same tools and techniques used by innovative top companies, while always encouraging musicians to stay true to their artistic integrity.
That said, if you do want to get your music heard, marketing is a necessary part of things. The good news though, is promoting your music doesn’t have to be hard. Pretty much all of it can be learned, and it doesn’t require a degree in science or maths to put into place a solid promotion plan for your music career. As long as you’re willing to learn and put the work in where needed, after a while marketing your music should become second nature to you. Who knows, you may even start finding it fun. 🙂

That’s not to say that conversational posts can’t be promotional! You just need to learn how to frame the content in interesting ways. For example, if you’re in the studio recording a new album, try sprinkling little updates on social media. Tell a story about your studio experience that day, share a photo of the mix, or post a short teaser video of a song.
This book is regarded as the music industry “bible.” It’s both comprehensive and informal, meaning it covers the key components of the music industry in-depth while still being an entertaining read. This book is a must-have resource that you’ll constantly reference when questions arise.
Like Instagram, Pinterest is all about images. Creating boards for high quality album art or band member interests can result in a large amount of organic exposure through Pinterest’s platform. Boards can even show up in Google search results.
The good news however, is if you’re willing to put in the work, it’s possible to learn how to market your music. There are plenty of guides which show you how to do that on both Music Think Tank and on my site Music Industry How To.
Admin Publishing Companies like SongTrust, Audiam, CD Baby Pro, and TuneCore Publishing are built for the DIY unsigned artist. These are all best in class services and completely above bar.  Also they make things much easier so you can focus on writing, building a fanbase, and all the other things that take up your time.  Admin publishing companies make it easier to manage your various publishing components, so you don’t have to register and keep track of dozens of accounts around the world.  For instance, they will register you with your choice of PRO in the US (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) and other PRO’s around the world .  While you do have an admin fee, it’s much easier than having to do that on your own.
There are thousands of examples of artists trying out unconventional methods to earn revenue in the music industry to great success. But why are fans willing to pay such a hefty price tag for an album they can get for free, minus a couple exclusive tracks?
Musicians can create demand for their music. As they become more known and more popular, more venues and event planners are going to want to book them. They can also do something novel, something charitable, something valuable (on a large scale) to get noticed. More bloggers and media people are going to want to interview and profile them. More people are going to want to listen to their music and go to live shows because of social proof.
Overall, securing a work at home job for those that love music is possible, as long as you find the right online opportunities and deliver satisfactory work. Apart from the jobs listed above, there are others that are more specific in terms of the work that needs to be done, so all you have to do is keep your eyes open and you will soon be making money from them. Some of the best ways to get musically related jobs is to sign up for job alerts on sites that usually display home based jobs and also offer information on the best way to apply for them successfully.

You can pay to boost your post on Facebook so more people see it. With Facebook’s organic reach being low, this can get your posts in front of more people who like your page, boosting likes, comments, and shares for important messages.
If you’ve accomplished something interesting, or have a unique story, the local media may be interested. In some cases, it’s as simple as calling them and seeing if they’d be interested in an interview, but if you’re less connected, you may need to write a press release.
Luckily for me, I found an easy way around that about a year ago. Instead of trying to learn crazy web languages or graphic design, I started search for nontechnical ways to make money online. This led me to taking paid surveys online.
Keep this quote from Abraham Lincoln in mind.   “If asked to chop down a cherry tree in four hours; I would spend three hours sharpening the ax and one hour cutting down the tree.”   Apply this to your money making ventures.  This ties nicely with leading with your best content.  
12. Do keep current with what is happening with other artists you love, admire, envy or follow. The artists who you perceive as a step ahead of you can be very helpful. They are doing what you should be doing. Figure out what it is and go do similar things.

Again, this book by 37 Signals is more intended for creative entrepreneurs opposed to musicians directly, but there are some great lessons to be learnt in this book about being unconventional when it comes to working on building your career as a musician.

To get your website into Google and Bing more quickly, you can submit each url of your website directly to them. Before you do, make sure you give the pages of your website names that people might search for, such as “-band name- store” or “about -band name-.”
These things are important to know before you start implementing specific music marketing strategies, as even the most powerful promotion methods will become less effective if you don’t know when and how to use them.
Mixing and mastering engineers, producers, instrumentalists, singers, and full demo production studios get hired through these sites by artists for their recordings. Live in a remote village in Tanzania and want your epic 127 track production mixed by a Grammy winning mixing engineer? Done! Well, if you can pay their rate of course. This has been a great way for freelance artists with home studios to get extra work – especially if they aren’t plugged into an active music town.
Wow I didn’t realize you could actually get paid to listen to music, that’s crazy! However, it sounds like you may get stuck listening to music you have no interest in. True fans are the ones that consume everything you create and are just waiting to buy whatever you put out next.  They’re the first to buy tickets.  They’ll buy all editions, versions, and all 5 colors of your vinyl pressings. The math he uses simply says if you make $100 from 1,000 fans ($100,000), it’s better than making $1 from 100,000 fans.  It’s not for everybody though.  It requires a lot of energy and investment to nourish these 1,000 fans. If you don’t like the idea of serving a thousand or a few thousand fans, and engaging them so directly, it might not be for you.  The idea of having less fans doesn’t sound like a good idea.  But the real point is to show you that in the beginning, if you focus on 1,000, and you really serve that audience, your fans will multiply naturally well beyond that.  Also you will be more in tune with your audience and know what they like.  
This book is an extremely fun and insightful read, written by the Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. How Music Works dives into what makes music catchy, and how musicians adapt their music to different venues and mediums. A great read if you want to learn about the business but want a more “leisurely” read.
However, there are lots of other music platforms that don’t accept music from these services for specific licensing reasons, like Soundcloud or Dozmia. It’s important to make sure your music is on these services as well, as they often have a loyal following.

I’ve read this several times now, and every time I read the first ten pages I get a huge burst of motivation to kick ass on social media. Gary Vaynerchuk is one of the few non-celebrities with over 1,000,000 followers on Twitter. He built his multi-million pound success from pure hustle on the social media, and this is where he shares how he does it. If nothing else, this book is a brilliant motivational kick up the ass.
Don’t skip over this. I intentionally did not title #2 as “Up your merch game” even though that is what this is BECAUSE you’re probably so over hearing how important merch is that you would just skip right past it. Listen to me. When on tour, merch is your #1 income generator. If you do it right. Artists fret over guarantees and door splits while totally ignoring the potential of merch.

I really like this book. It is a required assignment for a class, but I like it anyway. It is always good to know more ways to market your band, or who you are working with. It seems to tell you a little about everything, but it isn’t really boring to read. It is usually one of the first assignments that I do for the week – to read this book.

Some bands literally live stream from the studio to their backers. Many large bands who don’t need the money still run PledgeMusic campaigns (without the crowdfunding element) because it increases fan engagement and opening week sales. Artists like 311, Ben Folds Five, Imogen Heap, Howie Day, Korn (with the backwards R) and Lucinda Williams have all run campaigns. Many actually charted on Billboard in the opening week (all pre-order PledgeMusic sales are reported to Soundscan for chart placement).
This year Taylor Swift assumed and defined the #squad by amassing a multi-talented tribe including Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and “It Girl” Kendall Jenner. Her squad was then deployed across music videos, live shows and awards shows. She drove wide use of the term in culture and girl power and still benefits from it through a sense of ownership of the tag.

PS ALSO – if it’s right for your style, DO put yourself into the LOTTERY of the big time – record deals, the Voice, and shows like it, etc. Just realize it is a LOTTERY and a game, not a measurement of your talent, abilities, soul, musicianship or success. At most, it might be a metric of your good looks and commercial appeal. It’s a game you can play, but you can’t make the rules for it. Don’t take it too seriously, but PLAY it if you are brave and silly enough. We did! And while it lasted it was a thrilling ride on the rollercoaster of the music business. You just have to remember that you don’t own the amusement park!

Knowing how tough it is for young musicians to fund their band, I wondered how much does it cost to start a band? It’s more expensive than I imagined.  $15,000 USD (about £12,000 GBP) was what I came up with based on the costs of collective gear, rehearsal space, website and hosting, photography, design, learning to play, merchandise, first CD pressing, etc.  This doesn’t include transportation, living expenses, touring, promotion, and advertising costs.  It’s a lot of money for a group of four or five people to come up with, and the expenses keep snowballing every month.  The next question is how to make money with music online, at shows, and from other sources.  Below, I’ll explain my approach and best tips for how to make money from your music and fund your band.
Traditionally, licensing departments were a division within publishing companies. But with more and more demand for independent music on TV shows, commercials, movies and trailers, licensing companies have been popping up every day to connect indie artists with music supervisors. Some of the biggest have been doing it for 5-10 years now and have built up pretty solid relationships. Music supervisors love discovering new music to place in their projects, however, with so much music out there they typically only accept music from sources they trust: labels, publishers, artists who they have build relationships with, and now licensing companies. In addition to these more traditional licensing companies that pitch music directly to music supervisors with big budgets, many companies like, Triple Scoop Music, The Music Bed and Audiosocket, clear music with the artists in advance and put the songs up on their site for a set fee to be used, non-exclusively, by photographers and indie film makers. Passive income baby!

The Music Bed is another money-making opportunity for artists who are Songwriters or Recording Artists. They have numerous high profile clients as well, including Google, Nike, Netflix, Mercedes-Benz, and Jet Blue. I’ve read this several times now, and every time I read the first ten pages I get a huge burst of motivation to kick ass on social media. Gary Vaynerchuk is one of the few non-celebrities with over 1,000,000 followers on Twitter. Napoleon distilled all of the traits commonly found in successful entrepreneurs into 13 simple principles. I see musicians as ‘creative entrepreneurs’, and I see success as obtaining your dreams. This book is an incredible insight into how to realise dreams (but without the lame self-help twist).

PS ALSO – if it’s right for your style, DO put yourself into the LOTTERY of the big time – record deals, the Voice, and shows like it, etc. Just realize it is a LOTTERY and a game, not a measurement of your talent, abilities, soul, musicianship or success. At most, it might be a metric of your good looks and commercial appeal. It’s a game you can play, but you can’t make the rules for it. Don’t take it too seriously, but PLAY it if you are brave and silly enough. We did! And while it lasted it was a thrilling ride on the rollercoaster of the music business. You just have to remember that you don’t own the amusement park!
Networking with other musicians within your scene and building relationships with them is extremely important. Hang out in music stores, go to local shows, and be friendly to others who are supportive of your efforts. This will benefit you if you ever want to cross-promote an album release, need musicians to play shows with, or even need to find a new band member.

Mike King’s, “Music Marketing…,” is a great insight into the industry from someone who has actually worked in the game. He provides tips and tricks with how the industry used to and currently operates giving a leg up for the saavy artist who desires to make a living in the music world. Mr. King does not honey-coat the realities of the business because, after all, music is a business. The book takes the reader through some industry history, current operations (at the time) for marketing and supply chain distribution and insightful quotes from organizational leaders who have either grappled with or taken ownership of technology and how its transformed the business. The advent of internet sales and marketing are now in the forefront of the industry so I certainly look forward to a second edition follow-up. This is a must read for those setting their sights on making a career with music and I highly recommend it. Great read!

“Got your new Guerrilla Marketing Book. Only just started reading it and I like it. I’ve read other music biz books and they always seemed depressing because the attitude of these authors is “well so many people have tried so hard at making a success at music and failed, so the chance of you succeeding are really slim, but here’s this book anyway, good luck.” They made me feel defeated before I even started. So I’ve steered away from getting any more music biz books.

You could also use gigs to grow a fanbase in new cities, states, or countries. Work with a local established band and propose a headline swap. You’ll open for them in their home town and they’ll open for you in your home town. Just make sure you pick a band with a similar musical style. Do this a few times and eventually you’ll be able to do your own headlining show.
Where All You Need to Know About the Music Business ends, this book begins. Music, Money, and Success is possibly the most detailed book about the flow of money through the music industry ever written. Using real examples and conversations, the Brabec twins move meticulously through every money-generating area of the music business. It’s certainly not an easy read, but what it lacks in readability, it makes up for with exceptional depth.
There’s some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn’t already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman’s book over this one – a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he’s talking about.
“Your Band Is A Virus! Expanded Edition” is the bigger and better version of the best selling music marketing book “Your Band Is A Virus – Behind-the-Scenes & Viral Marketing for the Independent Musician”. At double the size of it’s predecessor, it is the ultimate music marketing book for serious independent musicians. “Your Band Is A Virus” presents an inspired approach to DIY music marketing coming from James Moore, founder of Independent Music Promotions.
While the Transfer Team does their best to avoid giving students credit deficiencies, it is not always possible. You can make up the credits you are deficient in by completing additional Berklee Online coursework, by applying for prior learning credit, or by completing additional external coursework in the area in which you are deficient.
This is a great book, but keep in mind that it’s not up-to-date anymore. The music business is rapidly changing such that the internet is more important than physical CDs. This book has a lot of great information on brick-and-mortar retail, but doesn’t focus enough on or have the most current information on online marketing.
The process is pretty simple. When you sign up (it’s free), you tell Music Xray a bit about yourself and your musical preferences. The site’s software then sends you tracks that you might like. Listen for 30 seconds and get 10 cents, or $12 per hour. The number of tracks you get will depend on your profile and the tracks being submitted by the bands.
Musicians will not only be introduced to all the tools available today but will be shown how to effectively leverage them to actually make money. More important, they will develop the mindset to be aware of new advancements both online and in the real world and always stay in tune with a constantly evolving landscape.

I consulted this book for its sections on promotion and publicity, which are very helpful, but found a lot more of value. Overall, a great starting point if you want to find out about the way the business works, and all the different ways music can be sold. Very clearly written and logically presented.

It’s hard to argue with the constantly evolving model that Kanye used for the creation and release of “The Life of Pablo.” There was the massive amount of buzz and press that the teased release generated, the MSG listening party/fashion show and let’s not forget the wax sculptures. He barely needed the beef with Taylor Swift to remain in the spotlight.
Donald Passman’s book provides the blueprint for the music industry. But if you’re a businessperson, publisher, manager, or otherwise really need to understand the financial side of the music business, this is your best resource.
Collectively, streaming makes up a little more than 50% of all music sales (as of January 2017).  Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, YouTube, Amazon, Google Play, and Deezer make up the majority of streams.
DIY music marketing often focuses too much on simply “covering the bases”. Submitting music to outlets including journalists, press lists or a directory of music blogs is equivalent to “door to door” cold calling. Proper research, groundwork and relationship building is what makes music marketing PR effective. Encore is a UK-based web and mobile app used to hire musicians for gigs. Gigs are typically for events, parties, weddings, or small venues, which can make this a lucrative side revenue stream. Many classical musicians have had success in landing quick gigs through Encore, and it’s completely free for musicians. For that alone, it’s worth signing up to see how the service works for you — if you’re based in the UK.
Grammy winning producer Alex Da Kid used IBM’s Watson to inspire his latest song “Not Easy,” the first of a 4-track collaboration EP. Watson Tone Analyzer analyzed over 2 million lines of social content related to cultural and music sentiment. Watson Beat was then used to examine popular musical trends in an interesting example of the new creative tools having an impact on the industry. Adding a mailing list signup sheet to your merch table can be a great way to collect emails from new and existing fans attending your shows. It’s especially powerful when accompanied by powerful incentives.

If you do this, make sure you have your music registered with BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC so you can earn royalties. Additionally, for discovery, add your music to Shazam so the businesses customers can easily identify your song.
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.
Album art is extremely important for the online music world. In most cases, your music will be prominently featured with album art being the first thing people see – before ever hearing your music. If you want a chance at someone clicking the artwork to hear your song, the image better look worth clicking.
I love this idea! Yet another way to generate income as a musician without having to leave the confines of your cozy artist space. I use a platform called ConcertWindow, and there are a couple others to choose from like Stageit and Gigee. There are some different tools available for use in all the platforms but something to keep in mind that I’ve found effective with Concert Window and Stageit is having the option to collect tips and give ‘rewards’ to your best tippers. It’s a wonderful incentive and a great way to really connect with your audience in a concert-type setting, without having to leave the cozy confines of your living room.
Social media is NOT a straight-up marketing platform. It’s really a catalyst for conversation and word-of-mouth marketing. About 80% of your posts should be funny, conversational, and interesting, leaving about 20% for promotional material.

Target continues to develop its music marketing by offering exclusive tracks and cover art.
This is a big one. As well as being aware that it’s important to market your music, it’s also important to realize the amount of time and effort that goes into this process. Most people initially think that the marketing process should start when you’re about to release your next album or single, and should end before you start working on your next project. This isn’t strictly true.
