I recently went back to look for a question I had and ended up taking more useful information that I forgot about than I expected! True fans are the ones that consume everything you create and are just waiting to buy whatever you put out next.  They’re the first to buy tickets.  They’ll buy all editions, versions, and all 5 colors of your vinyl pressings. The math he uses simply says if you make $100 from 1,000 fans ($100,000), it’s better than making $1 from 100,000 fans.  It’s not for everybody though.  It requires a lot of energy and investment to nourish these 1,000 fans. If you don’t like the idea of serving a thousand or a few thousand fans, and engaging them so directly, it might not be for you.  The idea of having less fans doesn’t sound like a good idea.  But the real point is to show you that in the beginning, if you focus on 1,000, and you really serve that audience, your fans will multiply naturally well beyond that.  Also you will be more in tune with your audience and know what they like.  
Search engine optimization on the surface seems mysteriously difficult, but at it’s core, it comes down to proper optimization of your website, and how many links are pointing to it from other, more popular websites.

People absolutely love being the very first to have something; they love having content no one else has; and they especially love having personalized items from a favorite artist. Musicians can create demand for their music. As they become more known and more popular, more venues and event planners are going to want to book them. They can also do something novel, something charitable, something valuable (on a large scale) to get noticed. More bloggers and media people are going to want to interview and profile them. More people are going to want to listen to their music and go to live shows because of social proof.
If you’re anything like me, I had A LOT of trouble asking my fans for help, especially when I was just starting out as a musician. I didn’t want to have to put my tail between my legs and feel like that annoying poor artist who’s always begging for money. But I learned that asking doesn’t have to be that way. It might be a stigma that asking for money is a sign of laziness, but YOU know in your HEART that you’re a damn hard worker, and you deserve to get paid!
It’s hard to argue with the constantly evolving model that Kanye used for the creation and release of “The Life of Pablo.” There was the massive amount of buzz and press that the teased release generated, the MSG listening party/fashion show and let’s not forget the wax sculptures. He barely needed the beef with Taylor Swift to remain in the spotlight.
Getting played on college or FM radio stations is a great way to expose your music to a dense population, which is great for touring. When considering radio promotion, you want to educate yourself on the arts of direct mail and cold calling.
Music is very much the same way in that even after it’s been distributed, it still needs to be promoted. But it’s also different from launching a product in that you can’t create a need for music (more on that later).
Since the courses at Udemy are offered through video, it is important to have a recording device such as a video camera or other online recording software that you can use to film your lectures and then upload them on the site.  You do not have to be nervous about being in front of the camera because you will get the hang of it after some time. Many classical musicians have had success in landing quick gigs through Encore, and it’s completely free for musicians. For that alone, it’s worth signing up to see how the service works for you — if you’re based in the UK.
Now onto the really great stuff – the books above are great reading if you want to learn about promoting music or the music business in general, but the most well-rounded and intelligent musicians I meet are often those who explore outside of the boundaries of the music section in their library. Here are my top five books of all time for musicians.
When I read scathing reviews of books such as the reivew of this book, by DAVID from NYC, I wonder about two things: 1) Did they read the same book I read, and 2) What hidden agenda do they have? I found that this book provides a one-stop reference manual for music enthusiasts of all levels, including record producers, recording artists, business managers, entertainment executives, Web designers, and multimedia developers. It divulges the specifics of making and marketing music, from conceiving an idea to working with a record company to designing and distributing a finished product. I love this book! And I don’t trust David of NYC. Sorry.

It is a verb in LA at this point “Venmo me.” Basically, Venmo is the easiest way to pay someone. It’s as easy as sending a text. Much easier than PayPal. He built his multi-million pound success from pure hustle on the social media, and this is where he shares how he does it. If nothing else, this book is a brilliant motivational kick up the ass.

It’s especially useful for those who want to become artist managers, but it’s also a solid resource for artists managing their own careers. Direct new incoming fans to your best content.  Most likely a music video, or your focus track.  It’s tempting to keep refreshing with new songs every month, but remember to lead with your best stuff when prospecting for new fans.  Direct Old fans to NEW stuff through messaging on social media, your newsletter, and links further down your website and news feeds.  So segment your email list into super fans, so you can deliver them new content directly. Most of all don’t keep pounding your best fans with the same focus track over and over again.

So what do you send to your email list? The obvious use of an email list is to let your fans know when you have an album coming out or a tour. BUT you can also use your email list to send fans to your blog when you have new content. (Remember, you want to get your fans on your website as often as possible.)

Headlining shows on a weekend can be the best money you make in the early days.  Another thing you can do is create and brand a monthly headline show for your band that has a theme.  This is a creative way to approach your local market.  Futhermore, you can invite different support acts each time to keep the bill fresh and build community in your scene.  Now, if you can’t come up with an interesting way to keep people engaged and coming back monthly, don’t use this strategy.  But, I like this strategy for several reasons.  It gives you focus.  You can put your energy into promoting one event per/month.  In addition it prevents overplaying your market.  You can still jump on as support for large national acts here and there.  But you’ll be less willing to do those when you can headline instead.  Finally use this to strengthen your brand and show your creativity.  Make it fun.

This book is loaded with great information and ideas for the independent musician, or even his/her manager; however, it emphasizes “bands” throughout, and I would have liked to see a bit more direction toward the solo artist and, for my needs, particularly classical artists. Much of the same information provided can apply in all cases, but obviously, classical artists do have some specific hurdles to deal with and it has been very challenging to find materials directed specifically to them. Overall though, while some of the information may be common sense, much of it may not be in use by any given individual, so the many ideas are valuable, indeed. It’s like someone already did a good deal of the brainstorming so the musician or manager can simply make use of it and move on with business.

This is a concept you may have heard about.  It was created by Kevin Kelly, founder of Wired Magazine, in a blog post he wrote called 1,000 True Fans.  It’s a math equation that makes a lot of sense for musicians, especially unsigned bands.  If you are a creator, and you have direct access to your fans and no record label or publisher in your way, you can maximize the income from 1,000 true fans and still make the same living as you would having a much larger audience.

If you are looking to get your physical CDs and vinyl marketed and promoted outside of your home territory, you have the option of licensing your master recording to a foreign record label or distributor.  It’s nice to have local people promoting in the territory you are targeting.  The physical market is still large in Japan, so it’s not uncommon to hear from Japanese labels seeking to license your master for the Japan market.  In Europe, since several languages are spoken, it’s important to work with a partner that has staff in each important territory for rock music (Scandinavia, Benelux, Germany, and the UK).  Consequently most European companies will want to handle the continent of Europe, and that’s OK. It’s better than splitting it up, because it creates lots of problems with distribution and royalty collection.   Also Australia is a unique market that can be great for licensing too.

I’m really big on the whole, don’t promote just your music. I believe that stepping outside of your music will make other artists more inclines to share your work. They automatically become a fan when you take the time to actually engage in their work. And I’m talking outside of the vain artists who see no one but themselves, or refuse to even acknowledge that there is a world outside of themselves.
When people look for marketing positions in the music industry, they search for “music marketing jobs”. I know this, because I see it pop up as a keyword all the time. That will be a subject for a future blog post.
I found this quite helpful to put together an overall plan for a CD release. While things change so much in such a sort time in the music industry, this was fairly up to date on most things. The areas where it was not current was not from a lack of knowledge from the author, just from maker changes. A very good overall read regaurdles of the type of music that you are releasing.

Marcus is passionate about marketing and the music industry, and has consulted to some of the biggest names in the music industry through his agency, Venture Harbour. Marcus founded this website in 2009, and has reached over half a million musicians ever since.
Mixing and mastering engineers, producers, instrumentalists, singers, and full demo production studios get hired through these sites by artists for their recordings. Live in a remote village in Tanzania and want your epic 127 track production mixed by a Grammy winning mixing engineer? Done! Well, if you can pay their rate of course. This has been a great way for freelance artists with home studios to get extra work – especially if they aren’t plugged into an active music town.
3. Another thing I want to talk about is websites that present themselves as work at home jobs doing data entry, taking paid surveys, and typing at home. Generally these websites are trying to sell you information on how to get involved in this type of work.
Sound Better is another service for Studio Musicians, Mixers, Recording Engineers, and other recording professionals. The site boasts affiliation with top music production professionals from around the world as well as dozens of Grammy Award winners. Clients can get quotes and find musicians to collaborate with and finish their projects. Fees paid to Sound Better are reasonable and the site is committed to facilitating creative collaboration among musicians and clients all around the world.
There’s a new service called StregaTone, they are like TuneCore but instead music distribution they offer music marketing for independent artist. I tried the service myself for my band and we are very satisfied with the service, our fan base is growing every day, we are selling 100% more through iTunes and Amazon and we are getting millions of streaming of our music worldwide.

I really like this book. It is a required assignment for a class, but I like it anyway. It is always good to know more ways to market your band, or who you are working with. It seems to tell you a little about everything, but it isn’t really boring to read. It is usually one of the first assignments that I do for the week – to read this book.

It’s hard to argue with the constantly evolving model that Kanye used for the creation and release of “The Life of Pablo.” There was the massive amount of buzz and press that the teased release generated, the MSG listening party/fashion show and let’s not forget the wax sculptures. He barely needed the beef with Taylor Swift to remain in the spotlight.
While music marketing isn’t that difficult once you know how to do it, it still requires a lot of time and energy to do it to the extent needed to make consistent money from your music. Often, doing all the marketing needed alone can lead to much slower progress, frustration, and possibly burnout.
Blogging adds pages to your website, which increases the chances that you’ll show up in search engines like Google for more keywords. Be sure to optimize each blog post so that it’s likely to be highly ranked in search engines.
If you realistically think about this, why would someone pay you an hourly rate when they do not know if you are really working or not? Therefore many of the opportunities to work at home are actually in the form of business opportunities where you work for yourself.
There’s some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn’t already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman’s book over this one – a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he’s talking about.

Musicians can create demand for their music. As they become more known and more popular, more venues and event planners are going to want to book them. They can also do something novel, something charitable, something valuable (on a large scale) to get noticed. More bloggers and media people are going to want to interview and profile them. More people are going to want to listen to their music and go to live shows because of social proof.
You can license your music directly with the few global Instore Media Play companies like Mood Media, PlayNetwork, or ScreenPlay. When you go in a clothing store, elevator, or restaurant and you hear music, it is licensed by one of these companies.  
Now, companies have a direct and almost instant link to people that use their products, and will pay people to help them speed up their market research. When I found out about it, I was a little skeptical, but I decided to try my hand at it anyway.
Music marketing isn’t just about how to get new fans, but it’s also about using the right distribution channels to ensure your music is in the right places so existing fans can easily find it. While some may visit your website, most will seek out your music on download or streaming service.

What?  Bear with me.  Most bands have been struggling to make ends meet, so when a label offers them a $25,000 advance it seems like such a large sum of money, and the opportunity to make even more.  But if your band is already financially stable it won’t seem like such a big deal.  When the label does a Dr. Evil with the pinky and says “We’ll offer you $25,000 dollars” as an advance, you want to be in a position to negotiate a better record deal.  Maybe a joint venture.  In addition, you could cut a deal that dedicates more of those dollars to marketing, music videos, advertising, or upgrading your live show.  
A great way to add a jumpstart to your fanbase is to play with musicians who have a much larger fanbase than yours. Network with local artists in your area, or in cities you’re touring to – check out their social media followings (both in size and engagement), and reach out to new artists who you’d like to play a show with.

This book is an extremely fun and insightful read, written by the Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. How Music Works dives into what makes music catchy, and how musicians adapt their music to different venues and mediums. A great read if you want to learn about the business but want a more “leisurely” read.

Writing online courses is no joke.  After many nights / weekends / early mornings, I’ve completed my newest online music business course for Berklee Online: Music Business Trends and Strategies.  I’m really happy with how the course has come out.  Tons of great content – videos, written content, case studies, and interviews with industry folks that I respect a great deal.  
In almost every industry, exclusives are a primary way to increase income. People absolutely love being the very first to have something; they love having content no one else has; and they especially love having personalized items from a favorite artist. This is why small performances are so valuable, and it’s the reason that physical sales can be so effective.
The good news however, is if you’re willing to put in the work, it’s possible to learn how to market your music. There are plenty of guides which show you how to do that on both Music Think Tank and on my site Music Industry How To.

They have numerous high profile clients as well, including Google, Nike, Netflix, Mercedes-Benz, and Jet Blue. However, their fee is substantially higher than Synkio’s 15% cut; instead, you’ll pay 50%.

Think about traffic as anybody searching for something and being directed to consume your music.  Examples are Google Search, your website, Facebook, Pandora, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, etc.  Make sure to have an easy to find link to Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube in all of these places when a potential fan encounters them.

The bands have been replaced by artists. All of us having our own little studio and our own huge ideas……and nobody reading this should have read past the first line. Impassable. I use to like my odds terrible. These odds are unprecedented. Hit the local scene. Isolate. Forget making it big. Leave that to the ones who already have the money. Because that’s what it takes. Shine as a local legend. Fame is fame. It has its benefits on every level. And if it’s done right? Those benefits include pay.
Fundamentally, music is promoted in much the same way anything else is – with online methods like email, social media, advertising, and with offline methods like live events (concerts and tours) and word-of-mouth.
One such website or you can visit is Tjobs.com. They match employers looking for workers with employees who are looking for opportunities to telecommute. This works out very well for people who have skills such as sales, customer service, website design, and other categories.

The secret, master networker Keith Ferrazzi claims, is in reaching out to other people. As Ferrazzi discovered early in life, what distinguishes highly successful people from everyone else is the way they use the power of relationships—so that everyone wins.
Basic rewards like downloads of your album are good, but don’t be afraid to get crazy with your offers. Let people donate enough for you to fly out to see them for a private show, or even fly them to your album release show. One big donation can make a huge difference in how quickly you’re able to raise the money.
TakeLessons is a site dedicated, as the name suggests, to teaching lessons. But it’s not just for musicians. People teach lessons on everything from foreign languages to art to music. However, music lessons are one of the most sought-after types on the platform. With a free TakeLessons account, you can reach students around the world using either their mobile app or web platform. Lessons are taught over video, and you’ll receive extra resources like file sharing to help maintain lesson schedules over time.
Music placements in TV, Video, Film, Video Games, and Advertisements.  For a company or individual to use your composition in “synchronization” with motion picture, they need a “synch” license and a negotiated fee to pay you for that use. Also they need a master license, and a fee for the “master” use, but that does not have to do with publishing. And if you own your master, then they need to obtain the master license from you. And if a label owns your master, they need to obtain the master license from the label.  In addition, every synch has two fees involved; A master fee, and a publishing fee.  Therefore those need to be agreed on in two separate contracts.  Research and contact music supervisors yourself to start.  Be wary of signing any exclusive agreements to pitch your music, or you risk not getting signed by a publisher or label.
If you decide to listen to Internet radio, you’ll earn money every time you enter the site’s CAPTCHA. In the USA, you’ll be rewarded 3 cents per CAPTCHA fill; in Canada and the UK, the payment is 1 cent. Payout occurs once you reach a threshold of $20.
And the newest of the crowdfunding bunch is Patreon. I call it Crowdfunding 2.0. Creators on Patreon ask their fans for continued financial support (patronage). Most patrons pledge $1-5 per piece of content released (music video, song, blog post, podcast, whatever) But some have pledged upwards of $1,000 PER PIECE OF CONTENT, because they can afford it and they really love the artist. Patreon launched in 2013 and is now paying out over $1 million per month to creators. This model embraces the new philosophy of asking your fans for support, not forcing them to buy. Because album sales are in a free fall, this is the next best solution for independent musicians with a highly engaged audience.
The steep decline has been fueled partially by music piracy, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Digital downloads fundamentally changed the way music listeners purchase their music, and iTunes took a 30% cut of every sale. Instead of purchasing entire albums, fans began to purchase just one or two tracks for a dollar each. This was a heavy blow to an industry which is still sustained overwhelmingly by full album purchases. Eight years after iTunes launched, music listeners in the United States averaged only .25 downloaded albums per year per person. That’s not enough to sustain a multi-billion dollar industry.
This is one of my favourite books on the boring side of the music business (sorry music lawyers). In Music Business: The Essential Guide to the Law and the Deals Ann talks through everything you need to know to keep your hands clean and be prepared when managers, record labels, sponsors, and other music companies start asking for your autograph on a dubious piece of text-heavy paper. The book is fun and has lots of hard-hitting case studies from her career as a music lawyer where well-known musicians got screwed over by lawyers, record labels and other music business professionals. If you’re looking to learn about the various types of emerging deals and contracts, this is the book.
Since the courses at Udemy are offered through video, it is important to have a recording device such as a video camera or other online recording software that you can use to film your lectures and then upload them on the site.  You do not have to be nervous about being in front of the camera because you will get the hang of it after some time. To have a better response to your videos have a plan on the topics you will cover as part of the music course so that it adds value to interested students. Some of the music course categories that you can teach on Udemy include music software, musical instruments, music production, music techniques, vocals and music fundamentals among others.
So what do you send to your email list? The obvious use of an email list is to let your fans know when you have an album coming out or a tour. BUT you can also use your email list to send fans to your blog when you have new content. (Remember, you want to get your fans on your website as often as possible.)
Patreon is one of the most amazing platforms I’ve come across, because it’s like every musician’s dream! It provides a way to rake in a steady stream of monthly revenue on the basis of sharing your art and giving rewards. They’ve built the site to provide a sense of community and filled that gap between artist and fan. It’s beautiful, and I can’t rave about it enough.

The article describes Amanda Palmer’s Kickstarter campaign as ‘the most successful’ crowd funding project, but according to her article here http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/dec/13/amanda-palmer-art-business-difficult-honest-decisions “while it grossed over $1.2m, it netted – when all was said and done – close to zero”. Of course profitability is not the only measure of success, and Palmer says she deliberately chose to run it as a loss-leader. But her account is interesting anyway.

Admin Publishing Companies like SongTrust, Audiam, CD Baby Pro, and TuneCore Publishing are built for the DIY unsigned artist. These are all best in class services and completely above bar.  Also they make things much easier so you can focus on writing, building a fanbase, and all the other things that take up your time.  Admin publishing companies make it easier to manage your various publishing components, so you don’t have to register and keep track of dozens of accounts around the world.  For instance, they will register you with your choice of PRO in the US (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) and other PRO’s around the world .  While you do have an admin fee, it’s much easier than having to do that on your own.
I’m tired of seeing my favorite bands break up because they can’t figure out how to make money with their music. It breaks my heart every time an incredibly talented musician quits music because they just can’t figure out how to make a living with it. Music is not something we do. It is who we are.
Companies like Audiam, INDMusic, Fullscreen, Maker Studios, ONErpm, AdRev, Believe and Rumblefish collect YouTube ad revenue for artists and labels. Multi Channel Networks like Fullscreen and Maker also act as agents for their creators and negotiate high paying sponsorships for their videos and YouTube channels.
When a business launches a new product, it needs to promote that product. Even if the product itself is amazing, and it serves an audience, if no one knows about it, the business serves no one and makes no money.
Kickstarter has lead the way with nearly $120 million going to successful music projects. IndieGoGo is a close second and, unlike Kickstarter, allows creators to keep the money even if a project is unsuccessful (if the creator chose “flexible funding”). The most successful music crowd funding project is of course Amanda Palmer’s project which raised $1.2 million for her album. But there have been over 18,000 successful Kickstarter music projects (mostly funding albums) ranging from $1,000 to $1.2 million. Crowdfunding has been a great way for indie artists to bankroll their albums and tours without a label or investor.
An intimate gig with 600 fans to launch their new tour and album “Hardwired… To Self Destruct,” naturally live streamed around the world. Brands have learned that live streaming allows them to throw smaller events, invite loyal fans and influencers, then extended the engagement via digital channels and content.
Lastly, don’t only promote your music online! I know the internet has made it easy to sit and promote your music from the comfort of your own home. That said, if you only market your music offline, you’re missing out on a load of other worthwhile opportunities!
The book wasn’t bad. It just didn’t seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I’m just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that’s the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.

There’s a new service called StregaTone, they are like TuneCore but instead music distribution they offer music marketing for independent artist. I tried the service myself for my band and we are very satisfied with the service, our fan base is growing every day, we are selling 100% more through iTunes and Amazon and we are getting millions of streaming of our music worldwide.
While the book gives you essential knowledge of how the business works, it doesn’t move much further than a solid overview. This is both an advantage (it’s actually enjoyable to read) and a disadvantage. But the biggest flaw of Passman’s book is that it fails to go into any real detail on music streaming, which is becoming an extremely important area of the music business.
To get your website into Google and Bing more quickly, you can submit each url of your website directly to them. Before you do, make sure you give the pages of your website names that people might search for, such as “-band name- store” or “about -band name-.”

To earn good money on the site requires delivery of high quality gigs and patience in building credibility through the reviews written by satisfied customers. If you have a lot of positive reviews on the gigs offered on Fiverr, you are likely to get repeat clients resulting in better pay and also be ranked as a better seller by the site.
Do some research, find blogs that cover your type of music, and send personal emails out to the bloggers. Are there any interesting stories about your new album, song, or tour? Having a unique story will definitely help you stand out from the thousands of other musicians releasing an album. Make it as easy as possible for them to cover your story and treat them like people. Remember, it’s all about establishing a relationship.
The bigger your pre-order is, the better your first week sales will be, and your project will establish a much bigger footprint.  As a result of all of the preparation, awareness, and branding in the pre-order process, you will increase your sales during the life of the project.

While music marketing isn’t that difficult once you know how to do it, it still requires a lot of time and energy to do it to the extent needed to make consistent money from your music. Often, doing all the marketing needed alone can lead to much slower progress, frustration, and possibly burnout.
What makes Anything You Want such a great read for musicians is that it explains how Derek was frustrated that he couldn’t sell his music online, which is why he created a buy-it-now button on his website. When other musicians saw Derek selling his music with a buy-it-now button they asked if they too could sell their music on his website, until he finally ended building an ‘online music shop’, known today as CDbaby.com. If you don’t want to spend the £5 or so on buying this book, I strongly recommending dedicating at least an hour or so to reading some of Derek’s life lessons on his blog sivers.org – you will not regret it.
Even though Dannen cast the music industry in a decidedly unfavorable light, his book was an unquestionable home run. It became a national bestseller, and he was even honored by the music industry itself with the Ralph J. Gleason award.
If you’re anything like me, I had A LOT of trouble asking my fans for help, especially when I was just starting out as a musician. I didn’t want to have to put my tail between my legs and feel like that annoying poor artist who’s always begging for money. But I learned that asking doesn’t have to be that way. It might be a stigma that asking for money is a sign of laziness, but YOU know in your HEART that you’re a damn hard worker, and you deserve to get paid!

Knowing how tough it is for young musicians to fund their band, I wondered how much does it cost to start a band? It’s more expensive than I imagined.  $15,000 USD (about £12,000 GBP) was what I came up with based on the costs of collective gear, rehearsal space, website and hosting, photography, design, learning to play, merchandise, first CD pressing, etc.  This doesn’t include transportation, living expenses, touring, promotion, and advertising costs.  It’s a lot of money for a group of four or five people to come up with, and the expenses keep snowballing every month.  The next question is how to make money with music online, at shows, and from other sources.  Below, I’ll explain my approach and best tips for how to make money from your music and fund your band.

When I read scathing reviews of books such as the reivew of this book, by DAVID from NYC, I wonder about two things: 1) Did they read the same book I read, and 2) What hidden agenda do they have? I found that this book provides a one-stop reference manual for music enthusiasts of all levels, including record producers, recording artists, business managers, entertainment executives, Web designers, and multimedia developers. It divulges the specifics of making and marketing music, from conceiving an idea to working with a record company to designing and distributing a finished product. I love this book! Multi Channel Networks like Fullscreen and Maker also act as agents for their creators and negotiate high paying sponsorships for their videos and YouTube channels.

This book is an extremely fun and insightful read, written by the Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. How Music Works dives into what makes music catchy, and how musicians adapt their music to different venues and mediums. A great read if you want to learn about the business but want a more “leisurely” read.

The marketing of your music should begin as soon as you’ve a good level of talent to promote. While the degree of marketing you undertake at the time will depend on what exactly you have to promote and what else you have on your plate, marketing should be an ongoing process for as long as you’re trying to become a more successful musician.
If you decide to listen to Internet radio, you’ll earn money every time you enter the site’s CAPTCHA. In the USA, you’ll be rewarded 3 cents per CAPTCHA fill; in Canada and the UK, the payment is 1 cent. Payout occurs once you reach a threshold of $20.
This year, Hussle upped the ante with Mailbox Money. He released the album for free, and printed 100 copies of the album, this time with both exclusive content and his personal contact information. The new price tag? One thousand dollars each. The week his album dropped, Hussle made $60,000 from physical CD sales. This is in an industry rife with stories of artists selling hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of CDs, only to never see a dime of it because of recoupment fees owed to their label. Hussle has found a way to innovate in an industry stereotypically slow to innovate.
The steep decline has been fueled partially by music piracy, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Digital downloads fundamentally changed the way music listeners purchase their music, and iTunes took a 30% cut of every sale. Instead of purchasing entire albums, fans began to purchase just one or two tracks for a dollar each. This was a heavy blow to an industry which is still sustained overwhelmingly by full album purchases. Eight years after iTunes launched, music listeners in the United States averaged only .25 downloaded albums per year per person. That’s not enough to sustain a multi-billion dollar industry.

Not only did OK Go continue to push the boundaries with their anti gravity “Upside Down & Out” video, they followed it up with the phenomenal “The One Moment.” Shot in 4.2 seconds and featuring the Morton Salt Girl, this video earned its spot on many levels and firmly positions them as one of the go-to music partners in the business.
When Drake’s “Hotline Bling” single came out it didn’t make a huge impact, but then the video was released, propelling it up the charts. Drake appealed to fans to push it to No. 1, but by then the new music queen had returned, so “Hotline” settled at the No. 2 slot. The music video is a best-practice benchmark on how to design a music video for the internet. A selection of choreographed dance movies on richly colored backgrounds, it’s screaming to be sliced into gifs and memes and it gave publishers a unique angle to cover.
