We don’t want to equate music sales to buying electronics, shoes, or clothes.  The point I want to make is that the consumption of your music needs to be a polished and effortless experience.  Think about the process of buying an Apple product, or shopping on Amazon.  If those don’t appeal to you, think of your favorite brand and why you like buying from them over and over again.  Go through the process of discovering and buying your band’s brand and products.  Is it ideal?  Does your best stuff come up first?  Did you find the track you want coming up first?  What’s preventing people from discovering or buying your music and merchandise?  Is it the algorithm?  The price?  Somebody else’s content?  Optimize the discovery and conversion process for your band.
After reading many different books on promotion and publicity for independent musicians, I*’ve grown skeptical toward what more a new book can offer. Generally, the books I’ve read don’t offer information for the trenches. Instead, they offer a little lame commentary on the fact that you would get more publicity and promotion if you were signed to a major label, and perhaps they theorize on how an independent musician might make a little splash in the medi, but there is usually very little practical information. “Guerilla Music Marketing Hand Book…” has proven an exception to this trend, with concise chapters full of very practical tips on tweaking press kits and pitches for better effect when approaching media about promo and publicity. Highly recommended.
To get your website into Google and Bing more quickly, you can submit each url of your website directly to them. Before you do, make sure you give the pages of your website names that people might search for, such as “-band name- store” or “about -band name-.”

Where All You Need to Know About the Music Business ends, this book begins. Music, Money, and Success is possibly the most detailed book about the flow of money through the music industry ever written. Using real examples and conversations, the Brabec twins move meticulously through every money-generating area of the music business. It’s certainly not an easy read, but what it lacks in readability, it makes up for with exceptional depth.

Also they need a master license, and a fee for the “master” use, but that does not have to do with publishing. And if you own your master, then they need to obtain the master license from you. And if a label owns your master, they need to obtain the master license from the label.  In addition, every synch has two fees involved; A master fee, and a publishing fee.  Therefore those need to be agreed on in two separate contracts.  Research and contact music supervisors yourself to start.  Be wary of signing any exclusive agreements to pitch your music, or you risk not getting signed by a publisher or label.

Seems absurd, right? Well, what are you expecting not having a seller back there at all times? Obviously you must take credit. A Square or PayPal swiper is totally free. Get it. Take cards. Who carries cash anymore? I sure don’t. Yes, take Venmo. Make merch your fans want to buy – not what you think you should make. If your audience is 50+ Vinyl is a waste of money. They ain’t buying it. If your crowd is 18-35 year olds, Vinyl may be the way to go – millennials LOVE vinyl. Announce that you have merch from the stage. Put your merch display in a prominent place in the venue – best is near the door. Get creative in your merch offerings. Do it right. And you will double your live show income. Guaranteed.
This is a crazy long list.  Don’t have too many distractions for your customers, however at least make them aware of each option sometime during your album cycle.  The 80/20 rule proves that 80% of your income will come from 20% of these revenue streams.  Therefore when asking the customer to buy or stream, the best bet is to focus on the top two or three streaming outlets, top two MP3 Outlets, Top two Physical Outlets.  Also you can use an infographic to steer your audience where you want them to purchase.
It’s another beautiful way to earn coin while still connecting deeply with your fans to create a memorable experience and a more engaged community of people who will adore you and support you forever!
If someone does ask you to play for free and you’re early in your career, don’t be so quick to jump on it. Alternatively, if you’re a bit more established, don’t be so quick to say no. It’s important to assess the opportunity.

Adding a mailing list signup sheet to your merch table can be a great way to collect emails from new and existing fans attending your shows. It’s especially powerful when accompanied by powerful incentives.
I expected more from this book. It is an easy read and does have some helpful pointers, but the author keeps repeating the same ideas in different ways from section to section and leaves much of the how to and who, up to the reader to search out. The cover proclaims “201 Self-Promotion Ideas” but it’s more like 50 ideas presented in different ways. I realize that repetition is key in promotion, but I don’t need so much of it in a book on the subject. Some Industry contact information is given, much of which are simple lists you can get on your own. I would have liked more insider contact information. The author does a great job at self-promoting but left me wanting a little more information on where and who to get help from. Sure the book is on self-promotion, but if you could do it yourself you wouldn’t need any help. He gives many examples in the book, but I found myself wanting more details. If you are a beginner at self-promo this book will get you going. The author works on your self-motivation. For the more experienced reader you’ll get few ideas and a lot of common sense talk that you probably already knew.
And the newest of the crowdfunding bunch is Patreon. I call it Crowdfunding 2.0. Creators on Patreon ask their fans for continued financial support (patronage). Most patrons pledge $1-5 per piece of content released (music video, song, blog post, podcast, whatever) But some have pledged upwards of $1,000 PER PIECE OF CONTENT, because they can afford it and they really love the artist. Patreon launched in 2013 and is now paying out over $1 million per month to creators. This model embraces the new philosophy of asking your fans for support, not forcing them to buy. Because album sales are in a free fall, this is the next best solution for independent musicians with a highly engaged audience.
When I read scathing reviews of books such as the reivew of this book, by DAVID from NYC, I wonder about two things: 1) Did they read the same book I read, and 2) What hidden agenda do they have? I found that this book provides a one-stop reference manual for music enthusiasts of all levels, including record producers, recording artists, business managers, entertainment executives, Web designers, and multimedia developers. It divulges the specifics of making and marketing music, from conceiving an idea to working with a record company to designing and distributing a finished product. I love this book! And I don’t trust David of NYC. Sorry.
New acts are coming out all the time fighting for people attention, to the stage where if you tell people online you make music and give them a free copy of your new album, most people won’t even download it. It’s because of this that you need to convince people your music is worth trying out. This is what music marketing is!
The last decade has seen the record industry shrink by 64% between 1999 and 2011. The amount of money spent by the average music listener in the United States fell from $71 to $26 during that time. There have always been doomsayers predicting the end of the music industry as we know it, but it looks like this time, they’re right.
Some of those are like Mechanical Turk, pathetic… More third world country ways to make money where that currency equates to usefulness, first world people having to resort to some of those third world rate incomes will further spin society and the economies into the toilet and further widen the gap from rich to poor gutting the middle to bleed out…
Music is one one of my favorite hobbies. Many people that follow me don’t know I’ve been singing since I was 5 years old.  Sometimes I find myself singing for hours and hours without even noticing. Then all of a sudden I realize mommy and wife duties are patiently waiting.
I’ve read this several times now, and every time I read the first ten pages I get a huge burst of motivation to kick ass on social media. Gary Vaynerchuk is one of the few non-celebrities with over 1,000,000 followers on Twitter. He built his multi-million pound success from pure hustle on the social media, and this is where he shares how he does it. If nothing else, this book is a brilliant motivational kick up the ass.
Now onto the really great stuff – the books above are great reading if you want to learn about promoting music or the music business in general, but the most well-rounded and intelligent musicians I meet are often those who explore outside of the boundaries of the music section in their library. Here are my top five books of all time for musicians.
Although Skype is designed for speech, it can still be used to teach music effectively and include instruments as well. You only need to find a quiet room and minimize interruptions during the teaching sessions to use Skype as an online teaching tool. As a voice coach, you will have to set a timetable with students on the best times for the lessons and the fees you will be charging for your services. If you want to make more money giving voice lessons, consider having group lessons so that you can teach more students within the same time period. Payments for the sessions can be done before or after the sessions through trusted sites such as PayPal.

The article describes Amanda Palmer’s Kickstarter campaign as ‘the most successful’ crowd funding project, but according to her article here http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/dec/13/amanda-palmer-art-business-difficult-honest-decisions “while it grossed over $1.2m, it netted – when all was said and done – close to zero”. Of course profitability is not the only measure of success, and Palmer says she deliberately chose to run it as a loss-leader. But her account is interesting anyway.

Live music is alive and well, and is managing to grow even as the rest of the music industry struggles. Performances, unlike mp3’s, can’t be duplicated. You simply have to be there to experience it. And so live performance is unlikely to go anywhere in the future. The demand is high, and the only way to fill the supply is by more and more artists performing. As long as there is music, there will be performance.
That’s re-marketing, and it’s a great way to increase sales. Many of your website visitors were likely about to purchase some music or a T-Shirt, but left. In fact, most people don’t make a purchase the first time they visit a website.

Before you start gigging, make sure you have the best gear possible so you can give music fans the experience they deserve. Get the best electric or acoustic guitar, the best amps, and overall best gear you can so that you give new listeners a great first impression.
The steep decline has been fueled partially by music piracy, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Digital downloads fundamentally changed the way music listeners purchase their music, and iTunes took a 30% cut of every sale. Instead of purchasing entire albums, fans began to purchase just one or two tracks for a dollar each. This was a heavy blow to an industry which is still sustained overwhelmingly by full album purchases. Eight years after iTunes launched, music listeners in the United States averaged only .25 downloaded albums per year per person. That’s not enough to sustain a multi-billion dollar industry.
While ads on Dozmia are more expensive, they currently convert really well – with a 15% click thru rate (15% of people who see an ad click it). With these ads, you get full screen exposure to music fans using the app.
In order to move things forward for yourself, you’ll need to learn to market your music, and increase your status all by yourself. Once you’ve done this and have something to show for your efforts (gigs under your belt, being covered in respected place etc), then it’ll become a lot easier to get people to help you push your music further.

The Internet makes it possible to reach millions and millions of fans around the world for an astonishingly low cost. The biggest obstacle is getting their attention in the first place. This is great for the mainstream artists who can invest millions of dollars into getting that attention, and then make a little bit of money from each listener. But the Internet is also cheap enough and efficient enough for individual artists to control their own destinies. You can launch a website, market through YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, set up an online store, and even distribute your music to all the major music retailers all for less than $100. That has never, ever been possible before, even less than a decade ago. Artists have the power now.
When people look for marketing positions in the music industry, they search for “music marketing jobs”. I know this, because I see it pop up as a keyword all the time. That will be a subject for a future blog post.
The book wasn’t bad. It just didn’t seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I’m just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that’s the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.

There are thousands of examples of artists trying out unconventional methods to earn revenue in the music industry to great success. But why are fans willing to pay such a hefty price tag for an album they can get for free, minus a couple exclusive tracks?
What I found was that I could make decent money just by filling out online surveys for an hour or so, everyday. It was surprisingly easy since I could do them while chatting on Facebook or after my kids went to bed, so I figured I would give it a month and see how much I could earn. At the end of the month, I was so excited when my first check came in the mail for

The author, Donald Passman, has been a top music attorney for more than 30 years since graduating from Harvard Law. He also taught an advanced music industry course at USC’s law school for many years, and famously negotiated R.E.M.’s $80 million Warner Brothers deal, among other accomplishments. In other words, he knows his stuff.
True fans are the ones that consume everything you create and are just waiting to buy whatever you put out next.  They’re the first to buy tickets.  They’ll buy all editions, versions, and all 5 colors of your vinyl pressings. The math he uses simply says if you make $100 from 1,000 fans ($100,000), it’s better than making $1 from 100,000 fans.  It’s not for everybody though.  It requires a lot of energy and investment to nourish these 1,000 fans. If you don’t like the idea of serving a thousand or a few thousand fans, and engaging them so directly, it might not be for you.  The idea of having less fans doesn’t sound like a good idea.  But the real point is to show you that in the beginning, if you focus on 1,000, and you really serve that audience, your fans will multiply naturally well beyond that.  Also you will be more in tune with your audience and know what they like.

After a few months of experimentation on our Facebook strategy, these are the key takeaways I have that could be helpful to anyone else who’s on a small marketing team and unsure of how to achieve social channel growth:
For artists who prefer the “do it yourself” route, James Moore has filled the Independent Music Promotions blog with dozens of original articles on how to properly market your music. You can learn how to write news releases, promote free music and contact music blogs. You also learn how to avoid pitfalls like automated services and social media numbers boosters. While this does happen, it’s extremely rare, and setting the unrealistic expectation that it will happen to you is a recipe for failure. Instead, set yourself apart from the crowd by learning all you can about different music marketing tactics, and treating your music career as a business.
To start making money reviewing music on either Slice the Pie or Music Xray, you will need to register for an account and provide basic details for it to be set up. The account will operate as your base on the site where the music you enjoy listening to can be downloaded for review. In addition, you will need high quality headphones, reliable internet and a good computer or laptop to be able to listen to the tracks well and give a detailed review. Although the pay for reviewing a track or album may not be substantial at first, you will reap the benefits in the long run as it builds up. Furthermore, the money generated on the site is also used to support musicians that need support for their career to start off on positive note.

Everybody wants to make money online, but very few people know where to start. For most people it comes down to having to learn advanced skills that they never have time to master, resulting in the feeling of helplessness about making money online.
If it takes $15,000 to start a band, you can imagine the expenses keep rolling in as the months and years go on. To get your songs heard, record a short demo to give potential clients. Make sure your demo doesn’t have more than 5 songs, and lead with your best song in order to hook the listener. Once you have a demo, create a website to showcase your music, and list any performance dates and contact information visibly. Then when you’re ready, start playing publicly! Try playing in front of a crowd at a variety of places, including open mics and retirement homes, in order to get your music heard as much as possible.
A bunch of those are the same and have been around forever, crowd-sourcing? Thats like what buskers do with their hat on the ground… You just took things that used to exist without the internet and now are calling them new ways to make money fro music when in reality its just old ways now transferred to the internet… A pro hype positive rah rah rah propaganda piece for the new age muso’s coming up in the net age…
Luckily for rappers, touring is where all the money is! The average concert attendance this year has gone up to 9,109 people. If the same well respected, mainstream rapper sells tickets for $25, and assuming that he has an attendance of about 9000 fans, he will make $225,000.  It is impossible to tell exactly how many concerts a rapper will do, with cancellations and all, but I am assuming around 30. This means that the average rapper will make 6.75 million dollars from touring. The only problem with this is that touring costs money. On tour, he will need to pay for food, gas, drink, hotels, equipment, transportation, and a roadie crew. Some tours (for bands like U2) can cost tens of MILLIONS of dollars. For our purposes, let’s say the tour costs about a million dollars. What is left? 5.75 million dollars. Then, there are all of the other rappers that are on the tour. They need to be paid as well. For example, artist Mac Miller is currently on tour with 4 other rappers (Chance the Rapper, Earl Sweatshirt, Action Bronson, Vince Staples). When you buy a ticket, you’re paying to see all of them. So, the 5.75 million dollars are split in 5. This means each artist makes 1.15 million dollars.
The default music service for all Apple products, Apple Music & iTunes are widely regarded for hosting the largest online music library in the world. The new Apple Music service goes one step beyond being the online home for your digital music collection – they want to help users discover new tunes based on what they’re already listening to. Could that be your band?

If you do have the money, you can hire a radio promotion company to reach out to radio stations on your behalf. These companies have existing connections at radio stations, and can give you play reports to help with touring efforts.

The steep decline has been fueled partially by music piracy, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Digital downloads fundamentally changed the way music listeners purchase their music, and iTunes took a 30% cut of every sale. Eight years after iTunes launched, music listeners in the United States averaged only .25 downloaded albums per year per person. That’s not enough to sustain a multi-billion dollar industry.
Everybody wants to make money online, but very few people know where to start. For most people it comes down to having to learn advanced skills that they never have time to master, resulting in the feeling of helplessness about making money online.

TakeLessons is a site dedicated, as the name suggests, to teaching lessons. But it’s not just for musicians. People teach lessons on everything from foreign languages to art to music. However, music lessons are one of the most sought-after types on the platform. With a free TakeLessons account, you can reach students around the world using either their mobile app or web platform. Lessons are taught over video, and you’ll receive extra resources like file sharing to help maintain lesson schedules over time.
However, there are lots of other music platforms that don’t accept music from these services for specific licensing reasons, like Soundcloud or Dozmia. It’s important to make sure your music is on these services as well, as they often have a loyal following.
But there’s a startling amount of opportunity out there for unsigned, indie, and major label artists alike. In addition to connecting musicians with fans all over the world for nearly no cost, the Internet has enabled dozens of new possible revenue streams. One artist who’s been particularly successful at innovating in an industry stereotypically unable to innovate is Nipsey Hussle.

The record industry is suffering from declining music sales, but things are looking up for artists. If you’re willing to take your destiny into your own hands, there’s an abundance of new ways to build a fan base and earn an income online.
“Alright” became the unofficial anthem of a movement; the Grammys worked with Lamar to create this powerful message by giving Compton locals a voice through the lyrics, offering a tribute to his home town and insight into his inspiration.
The author, Donald Passman, has been a top music attorney for more than 30 years since graduating from Harvard Law. He also taught an advanced music industry course at USC’s law school for many years, and famously negotiated R.E.M.’s $80 million Warner Brothers deal, among other accomplishments. In other words, he knows his stuff.
This year has been another turbulent one for the music industry, dominated by the battle and evolution of streaming platforms. Apple has put a lot of energy into defining its role in the modern music experience, and Google recently launched YouTube Music — quietly, but with a confidence fueled by positive consumer feedback so far.
None of this is good news for the recorded music industry as a whole. Streaming may eventually become a massive business fueled by tens of billions of consumer dollars, but we’re certainly not there yet. Today, physical distribution is too costly and limited in scope to be worthwhile. Digital distribution is the new standard. Digital distribution services like CD Baby, TuneCore, and Ditto Music allow any musician (independent or major) to get their music out to popular online music stores and streaming sites like iTunes, Spotify, TIDAL, Pandora, Google Play, and so on.
While some of things you do to market your music will only involve one way interaction (you relaying a message to fans and potential fans), things will really start taking off for you when you make this interaction with fans two way. By this I mean you don’t always want to be relaying messages to them and then shutting your ears. When you update your social sites for example, as you get more followers, chances are people will often reply to something you’ve said. They want to continue the conversation you started.
If you have passion for music and enjoy interacting with students that share the same love for singing, then you can create a music course at Udemy. Udemy is an online platform that offers music lovers a chance to create music courses on their site and then share revenue for every successful course they deliver. They offer you users a number of hosting and design tools that empower them to train online which makes it easier to set up an online course and get students to sign up at a fee. Their “name your price” model has personally allowed one of my fans to pay me $200 for my new album and another fan paid $20 for a single. BandCamp is moving to a Patreon-esque subscription service in 2015. CD Baby, Loudr and Tuneport also offer self-managed download stores that have become increasingly popular amongst the indie music community.

You can pay to boost your post on Facebook so more people see it. With Facebook’s organic reach being low, this can get your posts in front of more people who like your page, boosting likes, comments, and shares for important messages.
Social media is NOT a straight-up marketing platform. It’s really a catalyst for conversation and word-of-mouth marketing. About 80% of your posts should be funny, conversational, and interesting, leaving about 20% for promotional material.

There’s some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn’t already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman’s book over this one – a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he’s talking about.

Basic rewards like downloads of your album are good, but don’t be afraid to get crazy with your offers. Let people donate enough for you to fly out to see them for a private show, or even fly them to your album release show. One big donation can make a huge difference in how quickly you’re able to raise the money.
It’s fairly easy to set up a blog on the homepage of your website. Most website tools like Bandzoogle, and WordPress, have blog capabilities. Plan out blog posts at regular intervals like once or twice a week and share anything you think your fans would find interesting. This could be the inspirations behind certain songs, new lyrical ideas you’re working on, a funny story from the last band practice, or even a run-down of the gear you use.

You’ll most commonly find music marketing degree programs at the undergraduate level. Many colleges and universities offer music marketing or music industry concentrations within bachelor’s degree programs in broader fields like advertising, marketing, public relations or business. For example, you may be able to earn degrees like a Bachelor of Business Administration in Music and Entertainment Marketing or a Bachelor of Music in Music Marketing. At the graduate level, you might be interested in earning a Master of Business Administration with a music marketing concentration. Alternatively, you may be able to focus on music marketing within a Master of Science in Management or Master of Science in Marketing program.

I use to like my odds terrible. These odds are unprecedented. Hit the local scene. Isolate. Forget making it big. Leave that to the ones who already have the money. Because that’s what it takes. Shine as a local legend. Fame is fame. It has its benefits on every level. And if it’s done right? Those benefits include pay.

Music, Money, and Success is possibly the most detailed book about the flow of money through the music industry ever written. Using real examples and conversations, the Brabec twins move meticulously through every money-generating area of the music business. It’s certainly not an easy read, but what it lacks in readability, it makes up for with exceptional depth.
This book is loaded with great information and ideas for the independent musician, or even his/her manager; however, it emphasizes “bands” throughout, and I would have liked to see a bit more direction toward the solo artist and, for my needs, particularly classical artists. Much of the same information provided can apply in all cases, but obviously, classical artists do have some specific hurdles to deal with and it has been very challenging to find materials directed specifically to them. Overall though, while some of the information may be common sense, much of it may not be in use by any given individual, so the many ideas are valuable, indeed. It’s like someone already did a good deal of the brainstorming so the musician or manager can simply make use of it and move on with business.
Wow I didn’t realize you could actually get paid to listen to music, that’s crazy! However, it sounds like you may get stuck listening to music you have no interest in. I wonder if you can at least pick out a specific genre to listen to? Personally, the amount you would get paid doesn’t seem like it would be worth it unless you could enjoy it. What do you think?

After reading many different books on promotion and publicity for independent musicians, I*’ve grown skeptical toward what more a new book can offer. Generally, the books I’ve read don’t offer information for the trenches. Instead, they offer a little lame commentary on the fact that you would get more publicity and promotion if you were signed to a major label, and perhaps they theorize on how an independent musician might make a little splash in the medi, but there is usually very little practical information. “Guerilla Music Marketing Hand Book…” has proven an exception to this trend, with concise chapters full of very practical tips on tweaking press kits and pitches for better effect when approaching media about promo and publicity. Highly recommended.

It’s disappointing that music is such a powerful cultural source, but only allot less than 10% of their cultural  budgets to musicians.  The United States is in jeopardy of losing their organization completely, so it’s important for musicians to speak up about this issue now.  I went to the website where I was hoping to point you in order to apply for a grant, and this is what it says right now (here).  It seems rather dire. That’s right. When you’re a new independent musician, you won’t get much outside help. Ok, so you might get some help from a friend who likes your music, but other than that, don’t rely on record labels or fans to help you promote your music. Why’s that? Simple, because record labels don’t generally work with unproven musicians, and you won’t yet have a fan base at this stage.
Credit deficiencies are caused by transferring a course that is less than three (3) credits to fulfill a three (3) credit Berklee Online requirement. Students with a credit deficiency will be short of the minimum number of credits required to graduate once they have completed their program requirements. These are all best in class services and completely above bar.  Also they make things much easier so you can focus on writing, building a fanbase, and all the other things that take up your time.  Admin publishing companies make it easier to manage your various publishing components, so you don’t have to register and keep track of dozens of accounts around the world.  For instance, they will register you with your choice of PRO in the US (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) and other PRO’s around the world .  While you do have an admin fee, it’s much easier than having to do that on your own.
This is a crazy long list.  Don’t have too many distractions for your customers, however at least make them aware of each option sometime during your album cycle.  The 80/20 rule proves that 80% of your income will come from 20% of these revenue streams.  Therefore when asking the customer to buy or stream, the best bet is to focus on the top two or three streaming outlets, top two MP3 Outlets, Top two Physical Outlets.  Also you can use an infographic to steer your audience where you want them to purchase.

1. First of all you should know that most of the opportunities to work at home are not actually paid jobs. This is true because most employers do not know you and have no control over the work environment when you do it from the comfort of your own home.
Social media is a great marketing tool for musicians, however, many musicians use it incorrectly – spamming people with music video links in messages and comments in an attempt to get more followers and likes.
“Got your new Guerrilla Marketing Book. Only just started reading it and I like it. I’ve read other music biz books and they always seemed depressing because the attitude of these authors is “well so many people have tried so hard at making a success at music and failed, so the chance of you succeeding are really slim, but here’s this book anyway, good luck.” They made me feel defeated before I even started. Music marketing degree programs help you to develop the knowledge and skills for a career in the competitive and always evolving music business. But with more and more demand for independent music on TV shows, commercials, movies and trailers, licensing companies have been popping up every day to connect indie artists with music supervisors. Some of the biggest have been doing it for 5-10 years now and have built up pretty solid relationships. Music supervisors love discovering new music to place in their projects, however, with so much music out there they typically only accept music from sources they trust: labels, publishers, artists who they have build relationships with, and now licensing companies. In addition to these more traditional licensing companies that pitch music directly to music supervisors with big budgets, many companies like, Triple Scoop Music, The Music Bed and Audiosocket, clear music with the artists in advance and put the songs up on their site for a set fee to be used, non-exclusively, by photographers and indie film makers. This is like an online event planning company. I’ve never tried it out, but I have a few friends who get booked for weddings and corporate parties all the time through the site. Customers leave reviews of the artists and the artists’ ranking rises the more positive reviews they receive. Gig Masters costs $200-400 for the annual membership, but one booking will typically pay for that.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the marketing side of music, as well as those other marketing professionals who may have something to gain from learning more about the music side.
Since not as many people upload music videos to less-popular platforms, you have less competition, which increases your odds of getting discovered by music fans, making these less popular platforms great music marketing channels.
You can walk in Commencement when you are nine (9) credits or less away from completing your degree requirements by the end of the spring term. Please note: Berklee Online degree students are not required to walk in Commencement in Boston.
But that doesn’t mean you’re forced to perform in the traditional ways. Bars and clubs aren’t the only options. The Internet has opened up new ways to perform which didn’t exist just five years ago. One route is through live video performances, either for a small, personal audience through a service like Skype, or for a large audience through platforms like Twitch. On Twitch, you can live-stream your performance, interact with your fans through chat and video, receive payments, and sell merchandise. Some artists are using connections built through the Internet to book small house shows all over the country. The crowd is small, but intimate, and fans are willing to pay more in order to actually meet and hang out with a favorite artist.
Adding a mailing list signup sheet to your merch table can be a great way to collect emails from new and existing fans attending your shows. It’s especially powerful when accompanied by powerful incentives.
So let’s look at her strategy. As has been a trend this year, she backed her influence and refused to offer the album via streaming services to maximize revenue. Aside from the traditional media approach, there are two things I loved about her launch. The first is how she threw a free concert in New York two days before the album dropped and collected millions of fans’ email addresses through the entry process. The second was how she fueled the press buzz with fresh content by taking part in an Adele impersonator contest shortly after the launch.
Making money in the music industry is hard. But it is entirely possible, with the right strategies. A few years ago, I asked 12 of my favorite people to share their advice on how to monetize music. John Lenac has helped to drive the evolution of the technology and music landscape since his days as a musician, band manager, and local concert promoter in the late ’80s. He helped launch one of the first Alternative Rock FM stations (KTOZ, circa 1991), and grew it to become one of the highest-rated stations in the US. After programming and managing rock stations in Nashville and Kansas City, he was a Promotion Manager at TVT Records and then Rock Editor at HITS Magazine.
We ask all students planning to graduate within the current academic year to apply for graduation by December 1, regardless of their plans to participate in Commencement. Late application for students who do not wish to walk will result in processing delays for your academic record and diploma, and your name may not be listed in the ceremony program.
Do some research, find blogs that cover your type of music, and send personal emails out to the bloggers. Are there any interesting stories about your new album, song, or tour? Having a unique story will definitely help you stand out from the thousands of other musicians releasing an album. Make it as easy as possible for them to cover your story and treat them like people. Remember, it’s all about establishing a relationship.
BandCamp has been the most successful artist-managed music store (no labels allowed) and currently pays out over $3 million a month to independent artists. Their “name your price” model has personally allowed one of my fans to pay me $200 for my new album and another fan paid $20 for a single. BandCamp is moving to a Patreon-esque subscription service in 2015. CD Baby, Loudr and Tuneport also offer self-managed download stores that have become increasingly popular amongst the indie music community.

But although you might need clothes to stay warm and fashionable, you don’t really need music in the same way. It’s not a matter of personal hygiene or appearance. It’s not a pressing problem that needs to be solved. It’s not a matter of survival.
While some of things you do to market your music will only involve one way interaction (you relaying a message to fans and potential fans), things will really start taking off for you when you make this interaction with fans two way. By this I mean you don’t always want to be relaying messages to them and then shutting your ears. When you update your social sites for example, as you get more followers, chances are people will often reply to something you’ve said. They want to continue the conversation you started.
Seth Hochman is a music business veteran who has worked for Epic Records, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. He has held various marketing and digital account roles working with innovative commercial partners. His most recent role was with Universal Music Group as a Commercial Services Account Director, managing day-to-day business relationships with streaming partners. He launched & marketed UMG’s content on Spotify, from it’s introduction in the US in 2011 through it’s explosive growth stages. As account lead, Seth led UMG’s 20+ labels through an evolution in music consumption and revenue growth. Best practices that were developed over three years with Spotify were then focused on video streaming with Vevo, the #1 premium music video channel on YouTube. He worked with labels, artists, and digital marketing teams to develop and monetize visual content. With both Spotify and Vevo, Seth was responsible for Universal’s digital advertising strategies which increased download sales and streaming revenue for the company. Prior to working for major labels he was part of the original marketing team that launched Barnes & Noble.com and developed promotional strategies for Kozmo.com, an early forerunner in the on-demand delivery business.
This year was all about live, as VR/AR takes a backseat for now. Brands and artists were looking to take advantage of Facebook’s favorable live video algorithm and the growth of live across all platforms. Mobile and data were once again rich territories for expanding the way audiences engage with music.
The bigger your pre-order is, the better your first week sales will be, and your project will establish a much bigger footprint.  As a result of all of the preparation, awareness, and branding in the pre-order process, you will increase your sales during the life of the project.
It turns out that fans want to pay to support their favorite artists, and are willing to do so if only they have the opportunity. A Nielsen study found that more than half of the most active music listeners would buy exclusive content from a favorite band recording a new album. But surprisingly, 1/5 of even the least active music fans, dubbed “Ambivalent Consumers”, are willing to buy exclusive content if they have the chance. The problem isn’t that fans aren’t willing to pay — it’s that the music industry isn’t giving them enough opportunity to do so, for content they actually want. Nielsen estimated that the music industry could add between $560 million and $2.6 billion in annual revenue by giving fans better access to exclusive content.

As you say, one couldn’t do this full time and give up your day job, and I think you should only do this if you really love music, or you will be disappointed in the small change you get for doing this.
Being talented and letting people know about your talent are two very different things. As well as making music that people actually want to listen to, you need to get them to give you a listen in the first place. After all, how will people know you’re talented if they don’t give you that initial chance?
Another thing you’ll want to do offline is chase up opportunities. Email can be a slow process, but when dealing with companies, often a phone call or going to see them in person can speed things up considerably. Not only that, but you have the chance to potentially connect with them in ways others who go through email simply won’t.
